LOPS students kept busy in May
The month of May' has been very
busy for Kindergarten. We have
been Teaming about farm animals
and have made our own books
about these animals to share with
others. We have been busy learning
our numbers and letters so we will
be ready for Grade 1.
The Grade 1 class had lots of
interesting discoveries on their trip
to Maitland Conservation area. In
our steam study we found many
water creatures, and enjoyed the
chance to get wet. Nature games
helped us to realize 'how hard
animals have to work to find food.
Thanks to all the parents who came
on our trip.
Ribbit! The Grade 1 and 2 have
been hopping busy studying frogs
and toads. We had many froggy
friends in our class to study. Math
and Dr. Suess centres are fun too.
Our trip to West Wawanosh was
really great
We went to the opening of
Family Treasures at the Bruce
County Museum in Southampton.
Grade 5/6 came too.
(by Michael Grist and
Susan Guay, Grade 2.)
We all wore our sneakers on
Friday for fitness week. On Wed-
nesday, May 26 we had our Track
& Field day. Some athletes go to
Kincardine. We have been studying
Inuit life past and present in
research groups. Starpower has
made a difference in our classroom:
We have learned to use "I care"
language to solve our
problems.(written by Ian Tyler, Jeff
Weber)
Students are continuing to work
hard in Grade 4/5. We have been
practicing daily for track and field.
We have some excellent athletes
and good sports in our class. We
are currently writing ABC books on
sports, learning about working with
decimals and studying about Bruce
County.
Grade 5/6 finalized their year-
long Family Treasure project by
visiting the Bruce Cqunty Museum.
The students had the opportunity to
view books and tapes from other
schools that also participated in this
special unit. Alicia Thacker and
Jayme Sutherland had the oppor-
tunity to be interviewed on T.V.
Everyone agrees the Family
Treasure unit was wonderful and
they havea better appreciation for
artifacts.
After training for track and field
the Grade 6/7 had many successful
athletes from our class in our track
meet on Wednesday. The YAC is
June 2 in Chesley. The represen-
tatives from our class are Becky
Visser and Rachael Bushell. For
about the past three weeks students
have been bringing in their pets. It
has been most enjoyable.
The Grade 7/8 have started a new
unit in English entitled "Media." In
this unit they will be researching
and discussing such topics as realis-
tic and unrealistic programs, media
violence and the various fortns and
effects of advertising. Grade 8 has
finished their studies of movement,
mobility and migration in
Geography and are starting a study
of tourism, which will include
choosing a destination outside
North America and making all the
necessary plans to take a trip to this
location. Congratulations to all 7/8
students on their participation and
good sportsman like conduct at
track and -field.
Who are we? Where did we come
from? How are we different today
than we were 100 years ago? These
are the types of questions, we are
investigating in our most recent
English/history unit of study.
Canada is a nation of immigrants.
The nature of our ethnic make-up is
continually in flux. .
Today 19 authors from LCPS are
attending the Young Author's Con-
ference in Chesley. It is a great
opportunity to meet an author and
be involved in a creative workshop.
Congratulations to all track and
field athletes who received ribbons
and a, special thank you to Mrs.
Mayer for organizing a very suc-
cessful track meet.
On Friday, May 28 LCPS par-
ticipated in Sneaker Day. Each
class completed a sneaker challenge
and learned about heart rates, and
the importance of warm-up and
cool -down stretches.
