Rent debate ends
The debate over the Bruce County
planning office in Port Elgin is not
over. At its May ,18 session the
planning committee accepted Port
Elgin's offer to pay the rent on the
office, but only until December of
this year. The committee will then
review the issue, with possible
. closing of the office in January
1994.
Port Elgin offered to pay the
office rent until the end of 1994.
Reeve Ann MacKay wants to know
what the planning committee will
use as the basis of its review, and
how it will decide whether the
office should be closed or not.
Golf classic approaching
Want to play golf with Olympic
hurdler Jeff Glass?
How about with Tampa Bay
Lightning team member Terry
Crisp?
Or former Blue Jay Kevin Atchin-
son?
These are just a few of the
famous faces you'll see at the third
annual Goderich Celebrity Golf
Classic. The Classic will be held
June 4 at Sunset Golf Course, rain
or shine.
Along with meeting the celebrities
and spending a relaxing day on the
greens, organizers have added some
extra touches this year - like raffle
tickets for a rare, fully -autographed
Superbowl Champion Dallas Cow-
boys NFL football.
The Goderich Celebrity Golf
Classic raises funds for the Huron
County Special Olympics, so you'll
be able to help others while en-
joying yourself. The bargain ticket
price of $100 includes a fultday of
golf with a celebrity, as well as
lunch, an evening banquet and
prizes, so sign up. early. Raffle
tickets for the football are $2 each,
or 3 for $5.
To register, or for more infor-
mation, contact Don Hubick at
(519) 524-7825.
Last year the Celebrity Golf Clas-
sic raised $10,000 for Huron Coun-
ty Special Olympics. Some 20
celebrities and 80 golfers defied
weather reports that predicted rain.
Among the celebrities who at-
tended last year were former Hamil-
ton Tiger Cat Elison Kelly and
NHL referee Leon Stickle.
Sunset Golf Course is located just
off Hwy. 21, about 7 km north of
Goderich.
Conference is opportunity
for young area authors
The Bruce County Librarians'
Association is organizing their
eighth Young . Authors' Con-
ference to beheld in the Chesley
Community Centre on Wednes-
day, June 2.
This year, each school in the
southern section'of Bruce Coun-
ty was invited to participate in a
book -making unit in conjunction
with their Creative Writing or
Literature program. Two hundred
of these authors will be chosen
to attend the conference.
On June 2, these students will
get to meet with two famous
Canadian authors. They will also
take part in creative workshops
and be able to share their books
they have written.
Laura Dee . Gugler will be
addressing the primary students
and Della Burford will speak to
the junior intermediate students.
These two well-known authors
should prove to 'be both interes-
ting and inspirational to our
Bruce County authors.
For an event of this magnitude,
we rely on the donations from
service clubs in the area. Many
thanks to those service clubs
who donated towards this
educational ' event. We very
much appreciate' the support '
given and we hope that the
young authors will find the 1993
Young Authors' Conference to .
be one of the best.
