The Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-05-26, Page 5Neworganization for bikers To the editor: You may not be aware of this but May is "Motorcycle Safety and Awareness" month. So I thought it would be a good time to tell you and your readers about a new group being formed in the area. It is called R.A.M. - Regional Area Motorcyclists. The reason for its organization is to make motorcyclists aware of other motorcyclists and events of their interest. There will be no meetings, no discrimination against the bike driven, race, creed or sex of the driver and no politics. Only a newsletter four times a year. The newsletter will consist of: a mem- bership list including members' names and phone numbers so that members can phone other members and just go for a ride; a list of any events that members can ride to and/or get involved in, i.e. poker runs, toy runs, fall fairs, etc.; any stories of travels, places of interest that members have seen or en- countered on a tour. The cost is $6.00 for full member and $4.00 for an associate member (doesn't get a newsletter). The price covers the cost of the newsletter. The associate would be someone living in the same residence as a full member. 'r0 THE EDITOR rime The main objective of R.A.M. is to get out and go touring, meet other motorcyclists and just have fun! A lot of motorcycling today is family oriented. My husband has a sidecar on his bike and our four year old goes everywhere with us. I am writing this letter to inform your readers, who drive or sit on the back of a motorcycle, of our program with the hope that maybe they will want to go for a ride with us and have some fun. If anyone is interested they can either phone or write Corey Wor- mington, R.R.#1, Wingham, On- tario, NOG 2W0. (519) 357-3881 (leave a message on my machine). Cancer lbanvass nets $6;200 To the editor. April was Cancer Month, when the Canadian Cancer Society carries out its country -wide campaign to raise funds t'or its continuing fight against cancer. Lucknow and area once again successfully contributed their part to this campaign, thanks to the generous support of our many volunteers, canvassers and the response from the general public. Our final total increased once again to $6227.15. every time you donate money to the Canadian Cancer Society it is put to work to fight cancer. Forty- nine cents of every dollar goes to research, 21 cents to patient ser- vices; 18 to education; six to fundraising and six to ad- ministration. Last year the Bruce County Unit helped 198 cancer patients for a total of over $92,000. Besides the 44 canvassers of Lucknow and two that covered the area of Highway 86 east and west, the local Cancer .Society was ably assisted by the Women's Institutes: ICairshea (7), Holyrood (8), and Reid's Corners (9). This year the Reid's Corners area was divided with 12 canvassers looking after the Point Clark sections. Sincere thanks to all who par- ticipated. Anna Kreutzweiser and Mildred Loree, Chairpersons. Dear Mr. Heisz: It is with great disappointment that we discussed your letter at our recent Chamber meeting. The total membership feels that given some of the locations that your bank has placed Automated Machines, that Lucknow should have had one long ago. Lucknow is on a very highly •travelled highway (#86) with many cottagers stopping and shopping. As a business 'owner myself, I have had customers express disap- pointment that there was no banking machine in town. He's looking for your favorite - home remedy To the editor: I teach at York University in Toronto and am working on a book on home remedies and cures"' which we used. in Canada by our parents and grandparents. Such remedies of necessity relied en easily available ingredients which had become tried and true by use over mann years. Inome instances, the treatment may wave seemed to the patient worse than the' cure Yet, families used them - and ind'viduals swore by them. I woud be .very pleased to hear from ar.y of your readers who would share such recollections, stories or home remedies with me. Please cop.taci • Jim Cameron, 904 Nashville 'mad, Kleinburg, Ont. John Tyler, who withdrew his can- didacy before the election, Martin Van Buren, Millard Fillmore, and Theodore Roosevelt. Particularly disturbing was the last line of your letter: "We value - our almost ninety year association with the Village of Lucknow..." Perhaps another way to look at our request is that 'it's time to give something back to the community which has allowed your bank td do so well for so long. • These are the feelings of our executive and membership and we _ do hope you will reconsider your position as it would seem very improper for us to approach a com- petitive bank that we have not patronized. No plain bone for him/her/ii. Your choice of snacks for your best friend are lovingly placed in a white bag that has Fido's stamp (paw mark) of approval. According to the literature on the bag, Fido is a real dog who lives in Chicago where he (I think he's a' he) owns and operates what is referred to. as "famous" Fido's Doggie Deli. , I wonder if you can take your "best' friend" in to sniff and ponder what treat he'd like for the day. We've got cemeteries for pets, delis for dogs, why not an eat -in establishment for our four -legged • friends to get together and shoot the breeze. Over a bowl of bottled water they could weigh the pros and cons of that all important ques- tion - to eat or not to eat meat! • Attention Stream -side Landowners Help-Illiake_Lucknow Greener: As part of the Community Greenway Project, landowners along streams and rivers will have the opportunity to have shrubs and trees planted on their property to improve the health of the village's streams and rivers.
