The standing ovation
was richly deserved The concert
was fantastic.
An open letter to all cast, choir and
behind the scene crew members
(students and teachers) of "Oliver
Twist"
My heartiest congratulations on a
wonderful show! I understand six
classes were involved in producing
the spring concert at Brookside.
The remaining classes had per-
formed at the Christmas concert.
Open auditions for cast parts were
held for all the students in the par-
ticipating classes. It is my further
understanding that every student
that wanted to participate in this
play did perform some part in this
production.
It was quite evident from
watching the show that many hours
of hard work were involved. Every
student and teacher involved
(whether it was performing as
Oliver or singing in the choir or
TO THE EDITOR
being one of the stage crew) made
this musical a success.
The 100 plus choir members
played as important a role in
producing "Oliver" as the 45 cast
members on the stage. It takes a
great number of behind the scene
people to pull off such a great
show.
The standing ovation received on
May 4 was richly deserved. I am
looking forward to the next musical
at Brookside. In all the 13 years I
have attended concerts at Brook-
side, this production must be con-
sidered a No. 1. Bravo!
A proud parent,
Donna Adams.
The negative letter
serves no purpose
To the editor:
As parents of Brookside students,
we feel that it is necessary to
respond to the negative letter that
appeared in the paper May 12 con-
cerning the Brookside concert
"Oliver".
We thought it was nice to have a
change fromthe usual format and
the students and staff should be
commended for the extra effort
involved. Most productions don't
involve all students. In this case,
every student who auditioned for a
part was given one. There will
always be students who are comfor-
table in the limelight and others
who prefer a less prominent but
necessary role to stage a production
of this calibre.
A letter such as the one on May
12 serves no purpose but to under-
mine the hard work and morale of
students and staff.
Keep up the good work Brook-
side.
Linda Culbert, Claudia
Baskerville, Brigitte Wolf,
Margie Young, Dianne
MacLean, and Janet Wilkins.
To the editor:
This is in reply to the letter in the
May 12 edition of the paper, which
was signed "a very disgusted
parent."
The letter was, in one word, dis-
turbing. The Brookside Spring
Concert 1993 was, in my mind,
fantastic. The standing ovation
speaks for itself. One of my
daughters, a member of the choir,
was just as keen and excited to be
part of the production as was my
other daughter, who had a non-
speaking role (God • forbid!) on
stage. As anyone knows, who has
ever had anything to do with put-
ting on any size of production -
every part, every singing voice and
every stage crew is important and
shouldn't be belittled. It is nonsense
to say that only "Grade A" students
were given parts.
A letter of the type published last
week serves no purpose, other than
to weaken the already fragile self-
esteem of our children and to
destroy the positive feelings that
they are so deserving of. Anyone
who sat through such an excellent
production collecting statistics
couldn't have paid too much atten-
tion to the actual content of the
play. .
Each concert is different and
rightly so. Theteachers and
students deserve our words of
praise for the calibre of production
that we had the great pleasure to
see, not words like "disgraceful"
and "disgusted".
Susan Drennan,
A proud Brookside parent.
Egg Busters
On May 15, members of the Egg
Busters, along with Kathy and Gary
Leeman and son Justin, visited the
KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken)
outlet in Goderich.
KFC manager Larry White was
host for the tour.. The cook, Jeff,
demonstrated how to bread a
chicken. He used the `original
recipe'. Of course, members did not
get the secret recipe.
The group then travelled to
Burgsma's chicken barns,, where
Wayne Burgsma showed them
around. In his barn there are 22,200
chickens, 1,000 chickens less than a

they stopped for ice cream.
