The Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-05-19, Page 5Brookside's play taught many lessons.
To, the editor:
I am writing with regard to the
unsigned letter to the editor (rega-
rding the. Brookside play "Oliver")
which appeared in the May 12
Sentinel.
I am a parent of one of the
children who had a one -line part.
It is obvious that the writer did
not see the value of this excellent
production.
The point is that this play was not
about who got the main part, or
who sang in the choir. What is
important is that all the children.
were challenged to do their best and
improve their artistic talents. It is
about team work, each child
working together for the good of
the group. It is about learning a

classic which teaches us about the
evils of poverty and greed, and the
virtues of love and friendship.
I would like to caution the
children who' read the unsigned
letter to the editor, that this is not
the general feeling of the people
who watched your play. You did an
excellent job and you deserve
praise. Remember the standing
ovation you received after the play.
Also, it takes courage and charac-
ter to stand up in front of an
audience and perform as you did.
Courage is a virtue, anonymity is
not.
To. die staff of Brookside who
used their own time, during lunch
hours, evenings and weekends to
put this production together, please
do not become discouraged by one
unsigned letter, the production was
fantastic.
To the writer of the unsigned
tetter, maybe you should have lis-
tened and watched the children in
the play. If you had, you would
have seen excitement and joy on
their faces while they were prefor-
ming.
It is always easy to look for the
negative (which can usually be
found). When dealing with our
children, let's try looking for the
positive instead.

Words of praise to students/staff
To the editor:
I am responding to the letter from
• the "Disgusted Parent" of May 12,
1993. First of all I would like to
give a standing ovation to the
students and staff for putting on a
fantastic performance. I thought that
it was a BIG DEAL.
To put on a full -stage production
was a very nice change from most
of the regular variety types of
programs that have been staged in
the past. It is difficult to find
shorter programs to suit various
ages taking part and quite a number
of these programs in one evening
can lead to a late night for those
attending.
If the person has been attending
Brookside concerts "for years" as
they said, then they would know
that certain classes participate in the
Christmas programs and the rest in
the spring, thus being able to enter-
tain the community twice in one
year, generally with full par-
ticipation from students in both.
With regard to the involvement of..
the students, I think that it would
only be fair to say that not all
"Grade A" students are cut out for
on-stage acting. There are a lot of
"Grade A" (and those that are not)
who participate in the choir/chorus,
and many who do the artwork for
the backdrops, costumes, make-up
and to me, most importantly, Iend
support for those who do take on
more intensive roles.
I feel that quality and not quantity
(concerning numbers of students) is
a most important factor in a major
production. It takes a great deal of
time and dedication on the parts of
those involved and to me this was
certainly apparent in the perfor•
mance given on May 4, 1993.
To end my tetter I think that the
involvement should be on the part
of the "Very Disgusted Parent"
concerning school activities so that
they may have a better understan-
ding of the wonderful things that all
the students at Brookside School
are involved with.
Sincerely,
An Involyed and
Supportive Parent
Janet Wilkins
Please watch out for trees
To the editor:
The Lucknow and District Hor-
ticultural Society is grateful to those
who donated and volunteered their
time, and attended the successful
spring flower show, tea and bake
sale.
Just a reminder - when anyone is
cutting grass, please be careful not
to scrape the bark on the young
trees planted by the Society. Upon
inspection it is surprising how many,
I find that have been severely
damaged.
Jean Whitby, president.
