Page 12 — Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, May 12, 1993 Huron naturalists enjoy canoe trip down the Maitland Lucknow was central for two outings enjoyed by the Huron Fringe Field Naturalists this spring. Nine members with four canoes gathered in the town on the mor- ning of May 2, then drove to a launching point on the Maitland River south of Whitechurch. They took to the water on a morning , which was ideal for canoeing, even though a light southeast wind tested their muscles at some of the bends in the river. Lunch time found them at Wawanosh Conservation Area where they went ashore to exchange sightings while devouring sandwiches that were welcome after their paddling exertions. Sightings included many ducks, mostly mal- lards. They had hoped to see an osprey lift a trout from the river, but that treat will have to wait for a future adventure. The trip ended at Donnybrook north of Auburn on Road 22. Four hours, the measured time in canoes, far exceeded the few minutes re- quired to get from start to finish by motor vehicle, but the enjoyment of tranquility, the muffled sounds in a watercourse, the closeness to nature cannot be equalled in man-made devices. The other outing, on Apr. 24, was bevoted to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority's Lucknow Greenway Project. Three members of the club showed up to plant trees and shrubs in the town under the guidance of Brian Rose of MVCA, which supplied the seedlings. Har- vey Wightman, Dave Kilgour and Doug Broderick planted trees and shrubs beside Dickie's Creek in weather that explained the small turnout. However, it is surprising how much can be accomplished by a small group working -hard to keep warm! Huron Fringe Field Naturalists is a nature club that meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month excluding June, July, August and December at the Pine River United Church. Programs of speakers, slide shows and discussions on subjects related to flora, fauna and nature in general are planned for all general meetings.
