The Sandusky (Michigan) Sym-
phonic Band played a special con-
cert at Lucknow Central Public
School last ,week. The Lucknow-
Concert Band had played at their
school on a former band trip.
From the opening strains of 0
Canada and the American national
anthem right through to the closing
One Moment in Time, the
dedication of band members and the -
conductor was evident. A varied
selection of pieces were performed
by the Grade 9 to 12 members
.composing the band. Students were
particularly thrilled with the Pink
Panther and a Beauty and the Beast
segment.
Gordon Cayley was given the
honor of conducting the band for
one number.

at Lucknow Central Public School last week. It was an exchange
engagement as Mr. Cayley and the Lucknow Concert Band had
previously entertained members of their school. (Pat Livingston

Board hires new superintendent
A new superintendent of schools
will join the Bruce County Board of
Education at its administration'
centre in Chesley this summer.
The board has hired Warren
Hoshizaki, a principal with the
Dryden Board of Education. He will
replace retiring superintendent Don
Carroll
Trustees were told at their May 4
meeting that Hoshizaki has 16 years
experience at the secondary and
elementary levels, plus degrees in
business, mathematics and
education. He is now principal of a
junior kindergarten -grade 6 school
that offers programs in both English
and French Immersion..
Hiring committee chair Ray Fen-
ton said Hdshizaki was chosen from
a short list of seven candidates, and
comes with high recommendation
from colleagues in the education
field.
"We picked the best person for
the job," said trustee Frank
Eagleson of the unanimous vote in
favor of Hoshizaki. "But if I had
my druthers,we would have picked
someone from within (the board)."
PART-TIME STUDENT
CUTS
The proclamation by the Ministry
of Education for a week to honor
"partners in lifelong learning" hit a
sour note with one trustee on the
Bruce County Board of Education.,
Trustee Gord Thompson said the
ministry's announcement came the
same time as it proposed cutting out
funding for part-time students.
The province wants to increase
the number of courses that have to
be taken to qualify as a full-time
student. Many of the people taking
a smaller course load are adults or
students taking OAC part-time
while working to save money for
university.
Thompson said one of the
province's social contract talk
proposals would cut out funding for
part-timers and only give the board
money for full-time students. Local
taxpayers would have to cover the
full cost of education for part-time
students.
"They say it's all being done in a
fain and equitable manner, but we'll
see when it comes down," said
board chair Don Tedford.
COPYRIGHTS
A dispute over copyright fees is
holding up the use of some
photocopied materials in schools..
Until April 30, the Ministry of
Education held the license that
allowed boards of education to
photocopy materials for use by
teachers or students in the school..
That license will not be renewed,
according to Superintendent John
Lennon, because the copyright
agency representing writers and
publishers asked the ministry for a
doubling of its $2 million fee.
The agency is now trying to make
individual agreements with each
board, but Lennon advised against
signing that offer. He said fees
could increase dramatically in the
near future if the copyrighters are
dealing with many small contracts
instead of one province -wide deal.
Estimates are it costs $2 a student
for copyright fees on photocopied
material. Until the issue is resolved,
schools have been notified of the -
"legalities" of copyright and
photocopying and told to make "no
unauthorized photocopies of
copyrighted material".
"I don't like this," said trustee
Frank Eagleson. "We can't have
education without these materials."
The board is hoping negotiations
involving the copyrighters and four
umbrella groups, including the
Ontario Public School Boar As-
sociation, will settle the crisi
