(Don Jackson photo) Eight more wild turkeys were relocated Last winter, Huron County became home, once again, to wild turkeys - the first time wild birds had roamed our woodlands since the beginning of the cen- tury. A total of 25 birds were trapped in several locations in central Ontario and transferred to a pair of sites in the northem part of the County. At least six broods were produced in the spring of 1992, despite the cold wet nesting conditions. As a result, the fall population size was estimated at over 60 birds, and their range now encompas- ses parts of six townships. During the winter of 1993, an additional ` eight birds were relocated from thriving populations on the Niagara Peninsula and in Simcoe County. The labor for this effort was provided by interested volunteers and the Ministry of Natural Resources. All of the support costs for the operation were generously provided by the Ontario, Federation of Anglers and Hunters, from their Wild Turkey Trust Fund. With reasonable nesting con- ditions this spring, the Wingham population could easily expand to 150 birds by 1994 and 400 birds by 1995. ff funds are available, future trapping efforts will, be undertaken and will be directed at relocating birds within Huron and Perth Coun- ties. The Ministry would greatly ap- preciate the assistance of the public in reporting the sighting of all wild turkeys. This infor- mation will be of tremendous value in monitoring the expan- sion of the size and range bf the population. The Ministry% of Natural Resources has additional infor- mation on the ecology and behaviour of Huron County's latest newcomer. In addition, a video tape is available for loan to anyone wishing to learn more about North America's largest game bird.
