The Greenway Project
Viltage will spearhead .recreation component
by Pat Livingston
Paul Weitendorf of the Mait-
land Valley Conservation
Authority (MVCA) said the open
house held last week regarding
the Greenway Project was a
"positive event", with ap-
proximately 50 people attending.
Attention centered on
clarifying who is in charge of
each of the three project com-
ponents, in particular the
recreational component. Mr.
Weitendorf said the Village of
Lucknow will spearhead the
recreational element, with Coun-
cillor George Gibson as the
liaison. Service clubs will help
out as far as the funding aspect
of the recreational element goes.
The development of
recreational facilities would
include low maintenance items
such as pedestrian bridges, trails,
benches and boardwalks. The
creation of a `Lucknow walk'
would link scenic and
recreational areas in the village.
• Althoughthe project is planned
over a three-year phase in
period, Mr. Weitendorf said the
Village can set its own pace of
involvement.
Shrub and tree plantings will
fall under the jurisdiction of the
MVCA, with assistance from the
Lucknow District Horticultural
Society. Project information
points out that the three streams
flowing through the village
provide important habitat for fish
and wildlife. The habitat is
gradually and unknowingly being
damaged "through the removal
of vegetation from along the
streams. This natural vegetation
must be replanted to ensure the
health of the watercourses."
Using common species that are
found locally, plantings will be
completed on ( Several publicly'
owned sites, starting with Luck -
now Waterworks Park.
The first community tree plan-
ting day is set for this Saturday,
May 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participants are asked to meet at
the Kinsmen Ball Park and bring
your own shovel!
Mr. Weitendorf said lan-
downers will be encouraged to
consider similar plantings on
their own properties. MVCA has
limited funding available yearly
to funnel towards this area.
Planting on private land will
commence this week. Mr.
Weitendorf suggested that any
landowners interested in this
aspect should contact Chris Hart
at MVCA to get their names on
the list for next year.
Enhancing the fish habitat ,will
be coordinated by the Ministry
of Natural Resources with assis-
tance from the Salmon and
Steelheaders Association.
Funding in the amount of
$30,400 has been provided
through the Environmental
Partners Fund (Environment
Canada) towards the shrub and
tree plantings and fisheries
improvements.

Grace period
extended for
outdoors cards
Natural • Resources Minister
Howard Hampton announced that
he is extending the grace period for
obtaining the new Outdoors Card
and fishing and hunting licences to
May 15.
"While more than 450,000 Out-
doors Cards have been issued W
date, some problems processing a
small number of applications have
come to my attention," said Mr.
Hampton. "Extending the grace
period will allow us to process, the
entire backlog and at the same time
allow the people' of Ontario to fish
and hunt while waiting, for the
delivery of their cards."
Most applications are now being
processed in three to four weeks.
The backlog of applications
represent only two per cent of all
cards issued and is the result of
missing information, invalid hunter
accreditation, incorrect payments or
key-punching errors. The extended
grace period will provide the extra
time necessary to resolve these
problems.
Those who have not yet sent in
their card application, but who wish
to go fishing soon should consider.,
buying a Temporary Outdoors Card
and a one-year fishing licence from ,
any licence -issuing office.
Anyone who does not yet have an
Outdoors Card and is hunting .-
during the grace period should carry
some proof of ' being qualified to
hunt, such as an old hunting licence
or proof of having passed a hunter=
qualification test.
