(Don Jackson photo) Local co-op will be site of pesticide recycling program Lucknow is one of 51 sites across southern Ontario chosen as a depot for the recycling of agricultural and commercial pesticide containers this year. Plastic or metal containers up to 23 litres capacity will be accepted during regular business hours, at the depot to be set up at the Lucknow District Co-operative, on June 21 to 25 inclusive and Oct. 12 to 15 inclusive. Contractor personnel will be on the site to inspect and receive clean, triple -rinsed or jet -rinsed and emptied agricultural and commer- cial pesticide containers. Containers not properly cleaned will be refused. A pilot project held at six collec- tion sites in southwestern Ontario in 1992 is the basis for the year's program. The -ilot project was received positively by farmers, with an average of 5,000 containers col- lected per site," stated Dave Latter, Chairman of the Ontario Pesticide Container Management Committee. "Less than one per cent of the containers delivered by farmers to the pilot sites were refused because they were not adequately cleaned." This year's sites were chosen so that, on average, farmers will not have to drive more .than 20 miles to deliver the empty containers for recycling. Jeff Wilson, AGCare chairman, said, "We expect strong fanner support for the expanded program. With so many municipalities refusing the empty pesticide containers at landfill sites, recycling them is a much better solution than having to burn or bury them on the farm Thieves hit restaurant Between 12 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on An 18 -year-old Kincardine Town - May 2, Buffy's Burger Bar, Luck- ship resident was charged with now, was broken into. The board has just recently renewed its 'investigation of the program, while complaining that it doesn't know where the funding will come from or how committed the province is to its stand on making the program mandatory.
