Humanity affiliate in Huron County. Habitat for Humanity is a non- profit, non-government organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Habitat believes that everybody should have, at least, a simple, decent place to live. Habitat solicits donations of money, labor and building material and uses these to build or renovate homes for families in need. These families are required to help with construction of their own or other Habitat families homes as a condition to receiving a home. Families are required to pay for their home by way of an interest tree mortgage of up to 20 years. The family's mortgage payments are returned to a revolving fund which is used to build more homes for more families. The purpose of the May 8 or- ganizational meeting will be to explain how a Habitat affiliate operates and to find persons interested in serving on a temporary steering committee, or one of the sub -committees within the Habitat organization. Persons are needed to help on the following committees: fundraising, public relations/publicity, site selection, finance, family selection, building, family nurture, volunteers. For more information call Allan Dettweiler at 887-6098. Every year millions of dollars of alcohol, tobacco products, illicit narcotics and other items are smug- gled into Canada. Much of this contraband is brought into Canada via highway. All types of vehicles are used and the smuggled items are hidden in many varied and ingenious ways. Often' boats and 'small planes are used to transport large quantities of alcohol and illegal drugs to locations not controlled by Canada Customs. A great deal of the smuggled tobacco products and alcohol are sold in Ontario resulting in high profits for the smuggler and causing. more concerns for the citizens of the province. As well as the physical and emotional abuse to the individual and their family caused by the misuse of drugs and alcohol, the community suffers as well, when other crimes are committed to support these habits, and local businesses lose profits due to lower sales. If you have any information about anyone involved in smuggling goods into Canada, or any other crime, Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruee arewilling to pay a reward up to $1000 for any information leading , to an arrest. Call Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-800-265- 3787. You will not have to testify in court, and you could be eligible for a cash reward. 1,4:111111 411 RI. T-HURS. APRIL 30 - MAY 6 7 P.M. The increase, the first in five years, will help recover the costs associated with supplying the certificates- to the inspection stations and keep government expenses clown. Inspection stations will now pay $5, up from $1, for each certificate they purchase from the ministry. The stations then issue the certificates to vehicles that pass safety inspections con- ducted at their stations. These inspections are necessary to ensure a vehicle is roadworthy before transferring its ownership. It will be up to individual stations to determine whether or not they will pass on the increase to their customers. Currently inspection stations charge the public between $50 and $80 to inspect a vehicle for safety certification. Program will show how to prevent injuries.
