They can be contacted, for information on the club, This is the third year of the Luck - now Diary Club and it looks like it will be the best yet! , _ - Will prepare position paper on district health council by Heather Boa The Huron County Health Board is setting up a , special meeting to discuss the concept of a District Health Council, after the chief medical officer of health declined to provide the board with background information at its last meeting. The board was expecting a position 'paper for discussion purpose% . said member Dave Gower, at the Apr. 7 meeting. Instead, chief medical officer of, health Dr. Maarten Bokhout' submitted to -e -board e rs Tie wrote to the Ministry of. Health in 1991 and to a Huron County study group in 1991. d "We should have a discussion on the suitability of a district health council," said Gower. "Because ' other counties already have it in place doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing." Huron County Warden Tom Tomes said he was also under the impression the health board was to be provided with a position paper so it could inform Huron County District Health Council Steering Committee chairman Paul Carroll of its position. The steering committee is charged with the job of deciding, based on public input, whether or not the county would like a district health council. I'f the answer is yes, the next question is whether to establish a stand-alone council' or amalgamate with Grey -Bruce, Thames Valley or Lambton. Huron, is one of two areas of the province without a district health council, which is- primarily' a strategic planning agency. Councils also approve programs, plans and budgets for hospitals and- health boards. "The rest of the province has district' health councils. At some. point we have to recognize that that's the reality. We may not like it, but that's the reality. The reality is coming down on us," Bokhout said. "We have, to change our thinking." Bokhout urged the board to write their own proposal. "The most-honestway to res'ond is that- this may be -an issue where you draft your own response," he said. ' - 'Ilomes suggestedformer board members Bill Mickle and Bruce Machan be invited to help prepare the position paper. "You wouldn't want to maybe hear my views. I've' only been' on the board a couple of months," said Tomes. A' subdommittee of Mickle, Machan, chairman Marie Hicknell, Bokhout and administrator Jocelyne Murray will meet to prepare a position paper which will be presented to Huron County Council at its meeting later this month. District health councils in Ontario are currently discussing such issues as planning for children's and women's health services, multi-year planning for mental health systems in Ontario, geriatric medical care needs and strategic planning for regional cancer care and South- western Ontario emergency care services. While Huron is affected by these issues, it does not have a say in the planning process.
