CARE program will foster
friendly farming methods
Both wildlife and landowners
benefit from a new program to be
launched by Ducks Unlimited
Canada on Apr. 14. Over the next
15 years, the Ontario Land CARE
(OLC) program will pump $6 mil-
lion into the rural economy to foster
the development of environmental-
ly -friendly farming practices which
hre compatible with wildlife. OLC
is a major component of the North
American Waterfowl Management
Plan, and is delivered on behalf of
this partnership by Ducks Unlimited
Canada.
Ducks Unlimited Provincial
Manager, Dr. Rick Wishart, an-
nounced the Ontario Land CARE
program today saying the acronym
CARE stands for Conservation of
Agriculture, Resources and the
Environment.
The six main components of
Ontario Land CARE are grazing
management,, forage management,
buffers, permanent cover, on-farm
demonstrations and water
management. Financial and tech-
nical assistance are offered to co-
operators for managing their land in
a way that makes good agricultural
sense and also provides wildlife
habitat. The program promotes on-
farm soil and water conservation
which benefits the environment and
society . as a whole. Qualifying
landowners will . agree to protect
wetlands on their property.
Ontario Land CARE focuses on
regions which still retain good
wetland densities and will have the
besi wildlife and agrieuttural returns
for each dollar invested. This target
area is a 60 mile wide band runnint
from , the Quebec , border to
Brantford, and from there north of
Highway 86 to Georgian Bay and
Severn Sound. Agricultural zones
around New Liskeard, Timmins and
Kapuskasing also qualify for the
program.
Six counties receiving high
priority in 1993-94 include
Leeds/Grenville, . Peterborough,
Victoria, Brugia, Simcoe and Wel-
lington. Projects with good potential
in other counties will also be con-
sidered.
Ducks Unlimited Provincial
Agrologist, Galen Driver says, "On-
farm extension demonstrations are
an important part of Ontario Land
CARE. We hope these will create
local interest in OLC and show
farmers concrete ways that agricul-
ture and wildlife can work
together." For his year, three exten-
sion sites are being negotiated for
ARDA Community Pastures in
Leeds, Victoria and Bruce counties,
and two additional sites will be on
private farmland.
Although Ducks Unlimited has
worked closely with Ontario lan-
downers in the past to enhance
wetlands, this is the first initiative
to improve habitat on adjacent
agricultural uplands. In western
Canada, Ducks Unlimited, has had.
three years experience in delivering
a similar agricultural/habitat
program.
Ontario Land CARE has been
planned by a technical' committee
with representation from farm or-
ganizations and government agricul-
tural agencies. OLC compliments,
and may be used in conjunction
with, existing federal and provincial
programs. In addition toihe obvious
land use changes, it is expected the
program will enhance understanding
and co-operation between the
wildlife and agricultural com-
munities.
