Persons Case nominations are open
Nominations are now being
accepted for the 1993 Governor
General's Awards in Com-
memoration of the Persons Case.
The annual Awards recognize
longstanding and substantial
t.ontributions made by individuals
towards promoting the equality of
women in Canada.
Initiated in 1979 to celebrate the
SOth anniversary of the Persons
Case, the Awards commemorate
the lengthy political and legal
effort waged by Canadian women,
which culminated in the decision
rendered by the British Privy •
Council on October 18, 1929,
declaring Canadian women to be
persons and thus eligible for ap=
pointment to the Senate.
There have been 76 recipients of
the awards to date, including Mary
Two -Axe Early, aboriginal
women's rights actitrist; Marie
Hamilton, champion of the advan-
cement of black women; Therese
Casgrain, advocate of women's
right to vote in Quebec; and the
Honourable Florence Bird, Chair
of the 1967 Royal Commission on
the Status of Women.
The Governor General's Awards
in Commemoration of the Persons
Case are resented in a ceremon
held each October in Ottawa.
Nominations may be submitted by
individuals, women's groups,
community and business groups,

Inducted into Agricultural Hall of Fame
The late Kenneth G. McKin-
non, formerly of Port Elgin, will
be posthumously inducted into
the Ontario Agricultural Hall of
Fame at its 14th annual Un-
veiling Ceremony, Sunday, June
20, 1993 at 2:30 p.m. at the
Ontario Agricultural Museum.
Mr. McKinnon tirelessly
served the dairy industry in
Canada for thirty years. His
personal conviction that order
and stability benefitted all sec-
tors of the industry from
producers to consumers and that
supply management and orderly
marketing led to increased ef-
ficiency, improved milk quality
and the elimination of waste
marked him as a visionary and a
leader. Ken served on every
committee of the Ontario Milk
Marketing Board and was Chair-
man, 1977 to 1986.
The Honourable Lincoln
Alexander, Chancellor of the
University of Guelph and former
Lt, Governor of Ontario will be
guest speaker at the ceremony
and the general public is wel-
come to attend. Tickets can be
purchased by contacting the
Ontario Agricultural Museum.
The Hall of Fame Gallery is
open for public viewing for
anyone visiting the Museum.
Located 5 km west of Milton,
take Highway 401, exit 320 or
312 north. The Museum is open
for the 1993 season June 5th to
September 26th, 10 a.m. to 5
p.m., daily.
Emotional conflicts rage within victim
•from page 3
The victim may fear intimacy or the
abuse being discovered.
Damaged emotions.
Both women agreed that sexual
abuse of a child "is usually more
emotionally damaging than
physically damaging." Emotional
conflict rages within the victim.
They feel a betrayal of trust- Nor-
mal sexual development has been
interrupted and they may deny their
sexuality. Confusion about her role
is evidenced when a child is forced
into playing the part of an adult. A
great sense of loss is experienced
by an abused child. The victim is
robbed of . her innocence, virginity
and 'memories of normal childhood
experiences.
Behavioral problems that may be
evident .are abuse of others, sexual
Promiscuity, and some even turn to
prostitution due to a lack of self.
esteem.
Problems develop in relationships.
It may be difficult for the survivor
to trust another and enter into a
marital relationship. Abused
children may lose trust or respect
for parents if they believe the
parents failed to protect them: An
abused female child may as an
adult fall into an unhealthy relation-
ship with other women, or find it
difficult in making friends. As a
mother, a victim may be over
protective of her children. It is
difficult for a survivor of abuse to
trust God.
Seven steps to healing ,
Hope for the Abused uses a
seven -step format for healing: face
the problem, tell someone, receive
and give forgiveness, see God as
He really is, walk through the past,
deliverance and turn wounds into
ministry. Both ladies believe that
through these steps,.. victims of
abuse may realize and reach their
full potential, emotionally and
spiritually.
' Healing is not an overnight occur-
rence. It can take a long time and
may as said in tie beginning be a .
life-long .process.

It's not an - overnight miracle
•from page 3
Today, . she urges "Never
underestimate the power of the
word of God.
That was 13 years ago. Her
healing was not an overnight'
miracle. During her testimony,
Mrs. McRonald re -enforces the
fact that healing • from sexual
abuse may be a life-long
process. She says,' "I am healed
as much as I can be healed to
this point today." It was ap-
proximately eight months ago
that a memory, she had hidden
in a black hole, surfaced. She
had to deal with it, but Mrs.
McRonald said God only lets
those memories come back when
He knows we can deal with
them.
For Mrs. McRonald, part of
the healing process has been
turning her wounds into ministry
or good by helping ,victims of
ab a to heal emotionally and
'*ritually. For further infor-
mation about Hope for the
