Interviews completed for
empty . board position
by Heather Boa
The Huron County Health Board
has completed interviews for the
empty position' on the board and are
awaiting a response from the Health
Ministry.
An interviewing committee has
provided the ministry with three
possible candidates, after
eliminating another three
applications following interviews
earlier this month. The successful
provincial appointee will take over
for Paul Steckle, whose
appointment expired Feb. 20. He
served the board for five years.
"Reluctantly, we interviewed the
applicants, because we felt it was
the province's job," said Warden
Torn Thomes.
TRANSPORTATION
ENDORSED
A county -wide transportation
system was endorsed by the Huron
County Health Board at the Mar. 10
meeting.
The board passed a motion to
support the work of DIAMONDS,
FULFORD HARDWARE Er PLUMBING MART
874 2nd Avenue East • Owen Sound, Ontario • (519) 376-7729
a support group for . physically
challenged people, in developing a
specialized transportation system in
Huron County.
Over the past year, DIAMONDS
has lobbied the health board for
support of their research into a
transportation system. .The board
has been reluctant to give their
support, saying it may • be
misinterpreted as financial support.
DIAMONDS past co-chairman
Glen McLachlan told the board they
are currently working with another
group to develop a transportation
system in the Seaforth area,
financed by fundraising with "little
or no cost to the government"
"We hope to have it running in
the next year or so," he said. "We .
are working on a budget before
going to Seaforth Council."
The Seaforth area has set up a .
transportation committee with
DIAMONDS acting as a resource
group along with Bev Brown from
the Information and Service
Development for Seniors and
Physically Disabled Adults. .
Seaforth and area has more than
118 people eligible for a.specialized
transportation system. They need
the municipal government to be a
conduit for funding from the
Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
DIAMONDS would like Seaforth
to be the sponsoring community for
this project.
•
"Seaforth people approached ns.
We hope others will too and then
we can unite the whole group
together somewhere in the future,"
he said. "We hope within too many
years the province will give better
dir'ectiohto specialized
transportation."
Ultimately, DIAMONDS ' would
like a coordinated transit system in
the county, run by one group to
minimize resource duplication and
maximize benefits to seniors and
disabled people.
