New ag rep. names from Middlesex by Ron Wassink WALKERTON--It didn't take long for Don Agar to figure out what Bruce County's strengths were. Agar is the county's new ag rep and works out of the OMAF office in Walkerton. He accepted the position in Bruce, vacated by Mac Bolton who retired earlier last year. Bolton, who was born and raised in the Seaforth area, is pursuing a hobby in woodworking and is involved at the Bolton homestead in McKillop Township. Agar comes to Bruce County with many years of experience with OMAF, most recently with Middlesex County where he was ag rep for nine years. And, prior to that, he was assistant ag rep for. nine years. He said he tended to work more in crops and dairy in his years with OMAF, though his job change forced him to sell a beef herd he had been building for the past six years. Middlesex County is big on crops as its focus is cash crop. As such, Agar was heavily involved in conservation tillage. "I would like to think I brought some of that to Bruce County," he said. Agar Comes to Bruce during a Farming is still a way of life for Tony Lang •from page 13a pared to other businesses but that is made up by the enjoyment of the job, said Lang. "Farming is becoming less and less just 'farmers', the ones who are. left are becoming very business -like in their thinking," The computers in his office attest to the' fact that farmers are indeed becoming more conscious of the factors that affect their business. At his finger tips on the computer screen Lang can call up an -to -the - date weather report, or the Chicago Board of Exchange, which records the grain and cattle market prices. As well 'as drying corn, Lang Farms stores, buys ,and sells other grains. As for farming trends, Lang thinks Bruce County is going more and more to cattle. "And you'll likely see farm units increase very slowly in size to keep ---=oft-an-eeonornic seaale-with-t " A successful business man; Lang doesn't consider himself as such. "I'm happy. If you do what you're doing for money, you know you're in the wrong business. Farming is still a way of life and there is no greater a feeling, than seeing your crop or cattle grow." 1 busy rime for OMAF staff as the organization has traditionally assisted with the annual running of the International Plowing Match. He said he finds it ironic that in his four moves to various counties over the years, those moves have taken place the year before those counties hosted the IPM. He has his work cut out with the Bruce IPM as he is coordinator of the volunteer organizations. Agar, a '63 graduate of Ridgetown College, and '68 grad- uate of the University of Guelph, started working with the ministry in Wellington County where he worked in 4-11 and Junior Farmers for three years. -turn to page 20a Don Agar Is Bruce County's new ag rep.
