cal for the volume and type of
material being composted and pro-
duces by-products such as methane
and other offensive odor -producing
compounds.
Waste to be composted at the site
will consist primarily of chaff and
dust from wheat, oats and barley
during the summer months.
In the fall, straw, pods, stalks and
•cracks (broken pieces) from corn
and beans will be the bulk of the
material composted.
Year-round, a dry, powdery resi-
due produced in the white bean
polishing process will be com-
posted.
Elevator wastes hauled. to the
landfill site amount to roughly
6,500 cubic metres (8,500 cubic
yards) per year.
Rather than being buried in the
landfill site, that material will now
be converted to a fertile compost
mixture which will be sold for use
in landscaping.
The first batch of material to go
through the process were wastes
stockpiled from the local elevators
since the spring of 1992. The initial
mixture will be used for infilling at
the landfill site, until the quality of
the composed material is deter-
mined, said Chris Lee, who's firm,
L.H. Resources, of Walton designed
and built the facility and is under
contract to manage it for the first year.
While its capabilities are already
considerable, the Hensall Compost
Facility was designed to be expand-
able. Its capacity can be doubled by
removing an end wall and extend-
ing the channels.
The existing biomass processor
could service the extended facility.
Biomass processor
The biomass processor, a new
prototype compqsting machine is
the centrepiece of the Hensall Com-
post Facility.
The processor is a highly sophisti-
cated piece of equipment combining
computer technology with practical
purpose, resulting in efficient agita-
tion, mixing, aeration and transport
of the composting material.
The system is based on a design
by Jack Pos, a professor of agricul-
tural engineering at the University
of Guelph. Pos designed a system
for the University of Minnesota in
1989, with LH Resource Manage-
ment landing the contract as equip-
ment fabricator for the project.
Convinced of the merits of the
design and the potential market, LH
went to work on a redesign which
resulted in the biomass processor
which moves up and down the
channels, facilitating the composting
process at the Hensall Compost
Facility.
