Nuffield, Scholarship recipient has a
passion for conservation/agriculture
by Mark Cripps
George Thompson has a passion
for conservation and agriculture.
This passion, which took him
around the world as a Nuffield
Scholar, is attributed in part to the
influence of a man from his neigh-
bourhood in the rural outlines of
Goderich Township. That man is
Don Lobb, and the mention of his
name brings a smile and many
praising words from Thompson.
"He's a pioneer," said Thompson.
"Don was my inspiration for pur-
suing the path I have chosen."
In 1991, Thompson travelled to
England 'as .h result of being
selected to receive the highly
respected Nuffield Scholarship. The
agricultural award, which involves
the countries of England, France,
Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe
and Canada, is handed out annually
to a limited number of applicants.
In being • selected, Thompson
listed as his objective evaluating the
effectiveness of agricultural tech-
nologies and . public policies
designed to promote agricultural
sustainability with -respect to the
environment (in Europe, .the United
Kingdom, Australia and New
Zealand), and "determining their
appropriateness for the Canadian
situation. operations in the world as well as

gium and France. From there, he
also went to Australiaand New
Zealand and returned to Canada
frodi the entire journey just over
one year ago.
During his travels, Thompson had
the opportunity to experience and
discover the different"types of prac-

attending numerous conferences on
environmental practices. Thompson
also met numerous agricultural
politicians and farm leaders, while
on the journey.
The . Nuffield Scholarship is a
very prestigious award among the
commonwealth participants, but
Thompson said the award is not
taken as seriously in Canada as it is
in the other countries.
"In the United Kingdom, this
seholarship is a glory for farmers,"
said Thompson. "In Australia, they
fight very hard to. receive this op-
portunity.
"No matter where I went on my'
travels, doors opened," continued
Thompson. "They would say,
'you're a Nuffield Scholar, come
right in."
Thompson, who was born and
raised in Goderich Township and is
a University of Guelph graduate,
has now returned to Canada filled
with information and. inspiration for
the cause of the conservation. He.
began farming in 1980, but has
since scaled down to a part-time
operation. Thompson has also spent
time as a teacher at Centralia Col-
lege.
In 1986, Thompson went back to
