This OFWN member is making a difference
by Sue Ann EMS
DOBBINTON--Being involved
with the Ontario Farm Women's
Network (OFWN) gives Marie
Hammell the feeling she is making
a difference,
"I think it is important that farm
women have a voice and are
involved," said Hammell.
The OFWN was formed in 1989
and Hammel] has been a member
for about five years. It is an
umbrella group that was formed to
take in different women's groups
that were scattered throughout • the
province, said Hammell.
"It was formed by a number of
women who "felt there was a need
for it."
It ensures that farm women have
a voice on farm boards and with
the government and keep them up
to date on changes., she said.
Although Hammell is not sure
how many members it
encompasses, she said it is grow-
ing as more people become aware
of it.
The network's objectives are to
support and strengthen the family
farm and to work to secure equal-
ity for farm women in Ontario.
"The image of a farm wife is
withan apron and an apple pie.
It's time to change that image.
Working on the farm is my job."
Hammell said farming can be a

which eases the loss of topsoil.
' "It took the soil 10,000 years to
get here so we'd be darned if we're
going to blow it in one generation,"
he said.
Two years ago the business also
started their "own library at the
garden centre, complete with 20
agricultural and horticultural publi-
cations, and loans out as many as
they can to customers to keep them
better informed.
"A better informed custofner is a
better long-term customer."
A weekend seminar on pruning
has also been tried +successfully in
the past, with future topics ranging
from woodlots to roses . to
perennials.
If all this isn't enough,
Drummond is also the president of
The 1,100 member Perth County
Federation of Agriculture this year,
which is not only a strain on his
time, but an education as well.
"It's very time consuming," he
said, "but interesting."
Drummond said he's bound and
determined to continue tolarm,_an
evolve, as the years pass. Already
his oldest daughter Kollene--despite
her young age --has a knowledge of
the business, and one day may be
an instrumental part of it. Tradition
is on her side, after all.
"I wouldn't trade, it for being in
the city for anything," he said.

partnership and there are farm
women who are working off the
farm but that depends on the indi-
vidual situation.
"We are lucky enough we can
make a living with two of us
being here on the farm."
The OFWN is also to "foster
agricultural awareness and form
links between the members and
others in the community and
facilitate educational development
'of farm women."
-They are strong supporters of
Agriculture in the Classroom, a
program to educate children about
the farm and it's importance.
"The newsletters I receive from
the network help to keep me
„aware of the changes, educate me
and make me a better person."
As well as being a member of
the OFWN, Hammel! is an active
member on the farm and a mother
of six...ages ranging from one to
13.
"Everybody helps. The boys
milk the cows and such and the
oldest does a lot of babysitting for
me. They all have chores to do."
. Hammel! said being involved in
the network makes her feel like
she is making a difference and
you don't have to be a farm
woman to join.
"The Farm Women's Network
provides us with opportunities to
grow, to become more knowledge-
able; it also helps to enlarge our
vision of agriculture. As women
become more involved with agri-
culture in this province and coun-
try, it will be with the confidence
and self-esteem that the OFWN
has given."
