It winding laneway leads through a small bush and eventually to several . buildings and cages of all sizes. .The cages look empty but unfam- iliar sounds coming from them suggest otherwise. Welcome to Lazy Acre Farm. It's home to skunks, porcupines, birds of prey of all kinds, Ben. the bear, Tequila the cougar, Freddie the Llama, Stanley the bobcat, Grace and Dan the ostriches, . hedgehogs, peacocks, pygmie goats, wild boars...the list could go on. It would take forever to name the many species of animals at this wildlife sanctuary. The people who run it are dedi- cated to the animals they call their family. They may have as many as 200 at one time and a lot of these are permanent residents. Animal lovers extraordinary Dieter vonRichter and Anne Goodwin run a 200 -acre farm just outside of Allenford. They work with sick and injured. animals as they believe in the. rehabilitation of wildlife. Many of the animals have names and each is unique in .their person- ality...some more shy than„others and some warm to strangers more Ulan others. Lazy Acre Farm as it is today began 2Q years ago with vonRichter, his concern for ani • - mals and a blue heron. It grew • from there. The animals come to them through various sources. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) refers people to Lazy Acre and brings injured animals they find on a regular basis. vonRichter has been sanctioned by the MNR for 20 years but he is responsible for the feeding and lodging of his rare.collection of pets. Tequila the cougar has been at Lazy Acre Farm for three years. Here he says hello to Anne Goodwin. (Sue Ann Ellis photo) Not all the animals here were injured at one time. Some were destined for fur coats or were to be destroyed because there was nowhere for them to go. The money for feeding, housing and medical care for these animals comes out of their own pockets, said Goodwin. "It's called belief in what you are doing." Donations from people help to keep the expenses down. "A grocery store in Sauble • Beach gives us their leftover fruits and vegetables. In the summer we get up to three, crates a day." ' The Ministry of Transportation also brings road kill to the farm to feed the animals. Caring for and feeding the ani- mals is a full-time job for both vonRichter and Goodwin and their livelihood comes from the sale of alternative livestock like ostrich, rhea and llama, and horseback riding. About 30 horses give rides seven days a week in the summer. They also are a farm vacation facility with a small cottage on the premises to house visitors.'Breed- ing, breaking and selling. horses helps offset some of the costs as well. You are looking forward to. setting it free...then it dies. That's hard."
