Programs provide incentives
'from page 33
launched --Land Stewardship I and
II. The three-year programs
provided incentives to farmers to
employ soil conservation practices --
cover crop, erosion control
measures. There were . also
incentives to put up like manure
storage, pesticide storage, alternate
watering devices for cattle to keep
them out of streams.
Another program was the High
Crop Residue Program to provide
incentives to farmers to leave extra
amounts of crop residue on the
surface of the soil to reduce soil
erosion.
Another one was the National Soil
Conservation Program. It provided
incentives to farmers to retire
fragile land, take. land presently
cropped right out of production. For
example, instead of cultivating right
up to the stream either a grass strip
or trees could lbe planted "so
ultimately soil and nutrients would
remain where the land is being
cropped and quality of water would
be maintained and likely enhanced,
not only for the farmer but socie,t,i
in general such as Ducks Unlimiter,
anglers and hunters, those of us
who like to walk along streams."
It's through AgCare that farmers
have played a key role. The Ontario
Grower Pesticide Safety Course was
developed to update farmers on the
latest techniques, handling applying
and storing of pesticide pn. ' ,.
"We were concerned to, ral
reasons that many farmers weren't
taking enough precaution in how
they were handling it, that they
weren't reading the label properly
and they weren't convinced that it
was that important. We were also
concerned that many people
farming in province that come from
other lands that have difficulty
speaking our language so they have

trouble reading the label."
To date, 41,800 people have
completed the course. It was only
an Ontario initiative.
Another initiative was the Waste
Agricultural Pesticide Disposal
Program. This was another
partnership between farm groups
and government ministries.
"As a farm group, we were very
concerned of possibility of spills
and contamination as the result of
pesticide products there were in
excess of 20 years old, stored in
original container. We're talking of
deregistered, unwanted, unusable
waste agricultural pesticides, DDT
included. Here was a way to have
them collected and safely disposed
of."
AG Care has just initiated a sur-
vey to see if there are more
quantities of old pesticides out
there.
