WALKERTON--Jim Fischer is a
Walkerton area dairy farmer on a
mission to help farmers work more
in harmony 'with the soil they till
and the water they drink.
Fischer is the second -vice
president of AG Care (Agricultural
Groups Concerned about Resources
and the Environment. He is also a
director with the Ontario Soil and
Crop Improvement Association
(OSCIA). It's an umbrella
organization that tries to effectively
Speak about responsibility and the
economic aspects particulary with
farm management practices of
farmers and dealing with
environment issues as the name
implies --soil, crops and water.
OSCIA's main emphasis is on
producer education; county affiliate
education (all counties that make up
OSCIA), help the counties in
demonstration plots and research
activities. OSCIA acts as a go-
between the researcher and fans er
and deciphers what it perceives to
be appropriate information and data
for the farmers and put it in a
language that is practical for
everyday use.
Another emphasis that the OSCIA
is involved in the development and
administration of present and future
stewardship programs.
On issue OSCIA is just starting to
address are consumer concerns,
particularly dealing with soil
erosion, Fischer said.
Direcprs of OSCIA, in turn, are
involved in several committees and
other organizations in the province,
such as -AG Care. The purpose of
groups such as AG Care is to
provide and receive input that will
filter down to the local people.
Fischer said AG Care speaks to
close to 45,000 Ontario growers on
field and agricultural crops,
speaking on matters pertaining to
pesticide use and other
water
environmental issues "deahng with
the water and the air we breath and
soil."
"One of major mandates of Ag
Care. is to effectively communicate
information to our urban friends in
a very honest and factual manner."
Another mandate is very pro -
research.
He said AG Care is very
supportive of those areas that deal
with biotechnologies, anything that
will allow farmers to reduce
pesticide use be more target specific
and maintain and improve the
environment in general.
Basically, the initiative is to
inform urban consumers by giving
them facts in cases where there's a
lot of hype and so-called food
scares that are no substantiated, he
said.
To encourage farmers to that end,
