IPM '93 will feature more than plowing and machinery
by Ron Wassink
WALKERTON--The fall spec-
tacular of the International
Plowing Match t0 be held near
Walkerton in September promises
to be more than just plowing and
machinery.
The annual IPM is a chance for
rural folk from across the province
to see the latest in equipment,
machinery and tillage techniques.
But over the years, the IPM has
evolved into an event that attracts
all ages and all sectors of society.
Bruce County is hosting the
1993 IPM and the local organizing
committee is building on the
theme of promoting theshow for
urban and rural.
Jack Cumming of Elderslie
Township, chair of the organizing
committee, said he hopes to see
about 150,000 visitors at this
year's IPM.
Though plowing and machinery
play an important role, there's
more being added to the plowing
match each year.
Bruce County is taking an
opportunity to really show off
agriculture to everyone by the
initiatives it has included. The big
thing is a demonstration section
where 250 acres of land will be
devoted to machinery demonstra-
tions, crops demonstrations (beans,
corn, pasture, hay) and this will he
accomplished by taking visitors on
wagon rides through the various
demonstra&'ns. People will see
crops growing, and also those
same crops being harvesting using •
the latest in technology.
There is also a woodlot demon-
stration that will be a means to
help educate visitors.
Cumming said the.IPM hopes to
expand on the home show aspect.
Various home builders will have
"prefabricated" homes on display.
There will also be cottages, boats
and recreational vehicles.
"The catch -word is country
living," Cumming said, adding
that it's part of the show that
appeals to both urban and rural.
He said it's a "natural exten-
sion" of the IPM and by expand-
ing in this direction, the IPM
hopes to attract more urban folks
to the match. When he talks
urban, Cumming points to people
from Toronto, Cambridge or
• Kitchener -Waterloo.

It costs a lot of money. to host
an IPM and Cumming said the
whole idea is to attract more
people to the event in order to
capitalize on the investment. An
example of cost is last year's
Victoria County IPM, which cost
about $500,000 to host.
Back in 1976 Bruce County
hosted its first IPM and at that
time instituted a trailer park. That
idea has now expanded to the
point where people take their
holidays to coincide with the IPM
dates, Cumming said, and it also
means that this year's trailer park
will likely expand to about 500
sites.
The plowing match is a perfect
way to promote agriculture to the
city.
About 1,500 has been leased in
and around the host Johnston farm
west of Walkerton. 100 of those
acres are for the tented city, while
the rest is used for plowing dem-
