Post Supporter of "Line In The Dirt" Ministry recommends testing 46, certain wells Improper construction or main- tenance of wells can lead to direct contamination of the wells and groundwater. The Ministry of Environment recommends that those with older dug or. bored wells: (1) Test their well water for bacteria (through the local, Health Unit). (2) Examine the well to ensure that it meets present well standards. (3) Ensure that the upper 2.5 m of tile joints are water tight and that the upper tile is raised above the ground at least 30 cm and sealed with a water tight well cap. (4) The land surface around the well should be raised and graded away from the well. Abandoned wells can be a direct conduit for contamination of groundwater. By law (Ontario Regulation 612/84) the well owner is responsible ' for the plugging of abandoned wells. Wells which are abandoned should be plugged with concrete --or-other suitably. mate For more information on the maintenance of wells or on plug- ging abandoned wells, contact the staff at your Region Office of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.
