Area, automobiles are filled up with ethanol by David Scott On May 29, 1992, ethanol - blended gasoline made from area corn was pumped into cars for the first time in Huron County at Archie's UCO (formerly Archie's Sunoco) in Seafgrth. "We are a farming community and we are hoping that by selling ethanol fuel we will not only be helping ourselves, but providing a benefit for the farmers," said Marc Robinet, co-owner of Archie's UCO. Other towns in the area that also offer ethanol blends for sale include Clinton, Mitchell, Port Elgin, Hanover, Kincardine and Teeswater. W.G. Thompson and Sons Ltd. and Cook's Division of Parrish and Heimbecker are the two suppliers of virtually all the corn used to pro- duce ethanol at Commercial Alco- hol in Tiverton. Corn purchases for ethanol can be made at practically all Thompson divisions. Area loca- tions include: Seaforth, Hensall, Port Albert. The same applies to Cook's. Local divisions include: Walton, Hensall, Amberley. "Commercial Alcohol receives approximately 150 metric tons of corn a day," said Linda Wynia, Senior Administrative Clerk . with. Commercial Alcohol. - Because of the -condition of the Ontario corn crop this year, Com- mercial Alcohol will accept Grade 5 corn. In the past, for alcohol production, the company would accept nothing less than Grade 2. Grade 2-5 corn at 15 per cent mois- ture will produce -374 litres of alco— hol hol per ton. r After the corn is used to make alcohol, the remainder - termed • 'wet distiller's grain', is sold as cattle feed irrOntario,.Michigan and New York. "The most recent fig- ures say Were feeding 19,000•cattle daily (with wet 'distiller's grain)," comments • Wynia. The alcohol production uses starches and sugars leaving high quality protein known as DDG. This is a valuable protein supple 7 ment for feeding cattle. The ethanol used in UCO's fuels is produced .in Tiverton using all Ontario corn and then blended with tailored gasoline at Sunoco's Lon- , don plant. UCO's fuel sales jumped by 11 per cent after introducing ethanol-, blended gasoline at the pumps last spring. UCO outlets offer a ,pre- mium, mid -grade and now a regular ethanol -blend , gasoline new . sale at competitive prices. "But if the government didn't remove the eight cent per litre excise tax, then ethanol wouldn't have been market- b]e,_' maid B.obinet: The. consumer benefits too. Ethanol -blended fuel' is compatible with all motors, from a car to a lawn mower, and is approved by every auto maker in the world. "You ' don't; have ' to make any adjustments to your engine anti it doesn't matter if you already have gasoline in your tank when you fill up with ethanol, they can mix per- fectly well," said Larry Dolmage, co-owner of Archie's UCO in Seaforth. "Ethanol blended gasoline will actually clean the inside of the gas tank. The alcohol will pick up the moisture and take it out of the tank. In the winter it will replace the need for gas -line antifreeze," said Robinet. Co-op Ethanol gasolines are sea- sonally adjusted to provide cold - weather starting and prevent sum- mer vapour lock. Mitchell Co-operative Associ- ation, an independent co-op • has been offering ethanol -blended fuel to farmers since November, 1992. "We had requests from farmers and customers to get ethanol," said Gord Rimmer, Controller for Mitchell Co-op. •turn to page 25 Archle's UCO co-owner Larry Dolmage offers ethanol -blended fuels to his customers In the Seaforth area.
