The Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-03-17, Page 31Farm Progress '93 -Page 15 Plan :concept is to make environmental living more pleasing by Andy Bader More than anyone else, environ- mental quality is of the utmost importance to farmers. The obvious reason for this trait involves the day-to-day handling of the natural environment around each and every farm. In an attempt to make environ- mental -living more pleasing on the farm, pilot projects through the Ontario Environmental Farm Plan will be conducted this summer in six provincial counties -one of them Huron --in the hope that such a plan will be available province -wide by next winter. Paul Verkley, of RR 1 Atwood, explained the environmental, plan concept, as a way to be more aware of what farmers• do and don't do in terms of the environment on their own property; and where to improve. Verkley, a director and past presi- dent of the Perth County Federation of Agriculture, became involved two years ago in publishing a docu- ment entitled 'Our Farm Environ- mental Agenda' which highlighted the environmental practises --or lack thereof --of fanning. He said it was a way of "proacting" rather than "reacting" to environmental initiatives brought forth by the provincial government. With their document now com- plete, the next step" was to collabor- ate with various technical.. officials in gpvernment branches such as the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture & Food (OMAF), the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ag Canada. The pilot project; through the Ontario Farm Environmental Coali- tion (which is the Ontario Feder- ation of Agriculture, Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario, AGCare and the Ontario Farm Animal Council) was officially unveiled at a press conference in Guelph on March 9th. The counties of Huron, Kent, Oxford, Niagara North, Hastings and Temiskaming were chosen for the pilot project, with individual farmers in these regions asked to apply to their local OMAF. office and volunteer their efforts in mak- ing' the project work. The goal is 500 compteted environmental plans, Verkley said. Farmers in Huron County can contact the Clinton OMAF office for such a plan, which will include a half-day training workshop to fully explain the procedure and answer any questions. Verkley said one component of the entire procedure which might scare off farmers from volunteering is the confidentiality of it, since everything which is documented in the plan tends to be negative, or ways for the farmers to improve. Once the information is docu- mented, the organizers had to be certain that the MOE didn't use the potentially damaging information to lay pollution or other related charges. Legal advice has indicated that through the 'do diligence' defence, farmers won't be faced with charges since they're doing every- thing reasonable to prevent pollu- tion, Verkley explained. They won't be digging their own graves, in other words. The. agenda calls for every farm family in the province to voluntarily complete the environmental farm plan by ' he year 2000, demonstrat- ing that farmers are taking a responsible, proactive approach to environmental issues. Such plans may be required in the future to be eligible for funding under new farm environmental programs, Verkley added. . r .Ir. OTICE... J.L.
