Allen sits at the kitchen table as his wife Marguerite perks some coffee. She returns to the table with two mugs in her hands, both bear the photograph of a Clydesdale. By looking around the room, it's not hard to tell that this couple has a strong, personal interest in this particular draft breed horse. The Scotland originated Clydesdale, once used as a war horse, has brought pride and value to the Gregg families of Bruce County. With 27 show horses in their ownership, Allen, of Elderslie Township, and his brother, Wilson, of Paisley have continued in the family business that was started by their father who showed his first horse in 1934. Allen's two sons, Steven and Barry are also taking an active part in the business and when Allen resigns, his sons are ready to take over. "They're both very good at it," said Allen. Just last year the two showed horses and brought home grand championships. Although his sons JP.IFICIAGRIESS 9 a P bring pride and value to►4 the •regg families are capable horsemen, Marguerite is skeptical that Allen could give up something that gives him such pleasure. "He'll never be finished," said Marguerite. Marguerite spends a lot of time travelling around the world with Allen and his horses. The Greggs .,how their horses at local fall fairs, the Canadian• National Exhibition, Royal Winter Fair, . Great. Lakes . International regularly and occasionally the horses will lead them to other areas around North America. Allen said he couldn't guess how many prizes the horses have won in all the years they have competed. He said there have been times when they've showed and haven't won a thing. But showing and winning is good for business because it's a good way to display the quality of the horse to prospective buyers. The Greggs may own prize-winning Clydesdales but they are for sale if the price is right. "We had a three-year-old and it had a perfect mate and this chap from Ottawa wanted them worse than I did so he got them. We could have had a lot of fun with that pair of horses --they would have been tough to beat." •turn to page 13 Allen Gregg (left) and his son Steven Gregg hitch up their Clydesdale show horses.
