Mrs. Cameron's Kindergarten A class has just completed a unit on dinosaurs. ,. Mrs. Clarke, our librarian, helped us make a beautiful big book about dinosaurs hiding in the grass. Their favorite dinosaurs are Triceratops, Bron- tosaurus and the terrible Tyran- nosaurus Rex. They have predicted that since March came in like a lamb, it will go out like a lion. They have also enjoyed doing St. Patrick's Day activities. They have made shamrock -shaped booklets with St. Patrick's Day words and pictures. Their leprechauns turned out very nicely. Their only March birthday in Je,ani deBoer. March brought lambs, lions, shamrocks and leprechauns into Mrs. McMillen's Kindergarten B class. They are hoping March will not go out as a lion. "They are tired of bundling up for the winter months!" Each week the children are learning about a different letter sound. Last week was "S.' week. The boys and girls brought lots of things to share with. the class from snakes to sweaters. Everybody is looking forward to, the spring break. Mrs.. Hodsman's Grade 1 class has been learning to tell time, and having a look at different clocks and what! makes them tick. They are building a puppet stage out of cardboard and they're making pup- pets to go with stories they know like "The Little Red Hen." The class is sorry to say that their gerbil Digger died. Ralph, the other gerbil, is very lonely and spends most of his time under the soil. Miss Roberts and Miss Anguish's Grade 1/2 class has been resear- ching winter animals. Many groups have travelled to the library to find out information on their animal. Information booklets, models and stories have been created. Mrs. Baker's and Miss Wise's Grade 2/3 class has been studying "Children Around the World" especially the children of South America and the Inuit. They are now beginning a unit on wolves. In Library affected by cuts Happy Hearts Euchre winners Annie Scott, and Grace Echensweiler were declared the ladies winners at the recent Happy Hearts Euchre party. Norval Pollock and Hazel MacDonald were the gent winners. Friends of the Library It was reported at the last "Friends or the Library" meeting that the operating hours for the 20 public library branches across Bruce County are being cut by over 14 per cent to keep costs down and recover $100,000 deficit, from last year. Ten branches that were previously open Saturdays are to be closed that day; new hours for Ripley, Monday, closed; Tuesday, Rby Barb Grubb IPLEY 3-8 p.n.; Wednesday, 1-5 p.m.; Thursday, closed; Friday, 1-5 p.m. Saturday closed; story hour, can- celled. A block of approximately 10 new titles have arrived at the library. Thanks goes out to Melissa Culbert for her volunteer, assistance in shelving books. Appreciation is also extended to Marlene Collins for her donation of an assortment of books which will be put into circu- lation. It's people like this who make the library such a nice place to visit. B ROOKSIDE BROADCAST math they are doing multiplication, . and the grade twos are learning double digit addition without regrouping. All the kids have been working to spell priority words (most frequently used words in the English language) and how to write sentences. Junior news Grade 3/4, Mrs. Tebbutt's class, has been busy in these first two weeks of March attempting to forecast the weather. They were able to use the Weather Kit from the Learning Resources Centre along. With some classroom instruments and homemade equip- ment to help make 'predictions for the coming day. Although there seem to be some budding meteorologists in our midst, it is most definitely too early to stop listening to the daily weather predictions by Jay Campbell! Mr. Lobb's Grade 3/4 class has been busy working on posters on the environment, "Line in the Dirt", and World War II. They have all completed research on World War II. They also watched a movie on World War II called "The Fall, Hong Kong". In music they are listening to big band music and music made in World War II. Mrs. Worsell's Grade 5/6 class has completed their research essays 'on. Europe and each student prepared their display for the European Travel Fair which was held in the gym. Mr. Whiteley shared some videotape of Europe with them and Marian Zinn showed them , slides of Europe. They ap- preciate the time given by both of them to share their experiences with the class! A picture is worth a thousand words but how do you get a thousand words from a picture? Mr. Culp's, Grade 5 class isn't after a 1000 words, but a complete story that sets the scene, uses quotations and has proper paragraphs is the goal. Senior news Mrs. Dozois' Grade 6/7 class has been busy this month! The Grade 6 group has started a music research assignment, and in math they are busy working on problem solving. The grade sevens are working on Force and Ener3 in science, and they are studying "physical pat- terns". In Miss Morton's Grade 7/8 class, the grade 7s are busy working on : False Face (novel) questions, and both groups are busy working on fractions in math. In Mr. Hazlitt's Grade 8 class in history they have been busy working on westward expansion. In science they are studying force, work and energy, and when they come back from March break they will be doing a visual novel. This first aid session during the Lucknow and Kincardine Air Cadets Winter Survival weekend involved Jennifer Geoghegan of Kincardine as the injured person, and Lisa Caesar of Lucknow as the first aider, who Is checking for a pulse.
