TO THE EDITOR
Ifo the editor:
I am writing because of my dis-
gust over the drinking and driving
that goes on in this area. It is- not
unusual to see men cruising around
with open beer on their front seats.
These people never seem to get
caught. They seem to think that
they're invisible.
Last Tuesday afternoon, as my
husband was driving towards Luck -
now, a man in a truck full of men
threw a beer bottle out over the cab
in front of his truck. He couldn't
avoid the bottle because a cat was
approaching, so the rear tire
explodedbecause of it. Luckily he
kept the truck on the road. What if
it would have been a school bus, or
an elderly citizen approaching?
Let's get serious. If you want to
drink, go home and stay there.,
Don't risk the safety of others.
Drinking and driving is reckless and
thoughtless. Ask your children!

Volunteers
for Special
by -Mike Robinson
Huron. County Special Olympics
is looking for volunteers willing to
take time out to help local athletes.
Although Huron County Special
Olympics is relatively new in this
area, the group will celebrate its
second anniversary this summer.
• Local people involved . in the
Huron Special Olympics include
sports tech. co-ordinator Connie
Robinson and volunteer co-
ordinator Jennifer Dierolf.
Ms. Robinson said that in other
areas of the province Special
Olympics groups formed around
individual communities, but in
Huron, the group was formed to
serve all of Huron. There are three
sports co-ordinators to serve various
sections of the county, but Ms.
Robinson noted future plans include
the creation of "more home town
clubs".
She noted one of the main
fundraising events is the Celebrity
Golf Classic in Goderich and it was
this that helped provide the. initiat-

ive to start Huron County Special
Olympics.
Ms. Robinson explained the group
started off two years ago as a result
of the first Celebrity Golf Classic
which was held to generate funds
for Special Olympics across the
province. However, at that time
there was no specific Special
Olympics group in Huron.
Ms. Dierolf said participation in
the program has been slow because
people are. still finding out about it.
Ongoing plans include finding
volunteers to help to create a local
executive and to find more coaches
in the Wingham area.
Currently Wingham has ' both
bowling clubs and a track and field
club. For those wanting to take part
in the swimming program it would
involf4e driving to Vanastra.
But there are any number of ways
to help out. Ms. Dierolf said Huron
