Madill principal accepts
move to Exeter school
hy Cameron J. Wood
F. E. Madill will be losing
their principal next year. Herb
Murphy, who has been the chief
administrator at the local high
school for the past four years,
Lias accepted the principalship at
South Huron District High
School in Exeter.
The official announcement
came last Tuesday, but Mr.
Murphy said the discussions with
the school board have been
going on since Christmas.
"It's the usual kind of situ-
ation," he said Thursday after-
noon in a phone interview.
"Each year there are potential
retirements • and moves. The
board usually asks you if you
are interested. This year three
principals will rotate."
Mr. Murphy, a 13 -year veteran
of being a principal, said the
move for him was made on a
personal basis and Exeter fit
better into his personal life.
South Huron will be his fourth
admin
chiefi '
school asstrafor.
"But my personal feelings are
that it is always difficult to
change schools. You establish
close working relationships with
the staff and it's difficult to
break away from those."
Mr. Murphy, who served as a
vice-principal at South Huron
DHS in the 1970s, said there is
also the difficulty in Leaving a
school feeling some projects
haven't been completed. For
example, the Transition Years
program is just about to be
implemented in September and
Mr. Murphy has been working
with the school and board staff
on the implementation.
Mr. Murphy had great praise
for Madill, stating it is perhaps
the best school, physically, aca-
demically and emotionally in the
county.
"It's not that I want to leave
Madill. It's the biggest school in
the county, and perhaps the best,
but I like the idea of Exeter." He
added he is looking forward to
the new challenges -that await
him at SHDHS.
Replacing Mr. Murphy is
Bluewater Secondary School
principal ShirleyWeary. South
Huron principal Joe Wooden.
moves to Bluewater SS. Ms.
Weary begins her term officially
in August.
Resignation causes delay . in
presenting CAVEAT petition
Nancy Machan of Brussels was
two days away from an official visit
to the House of Commons to pres-
ent her Canada -wide petition* for
CAVEAT (Canadians Against Viol-
ence Everywhere' Advocating its
Termination) with 1.4 million signa-
tures, when Brian Mulroney
announced his resignation. The visit
was subsequently cancelled.
Originally the goal was for
100,000 signatures on the CAVEAT
petition. Mrs. Machan is happy with
the response of 1.4 million names
from places as far away as Nova
Scotia and Montreal to the western
provinces. -
"Sometimes people were scared to
sign the petition but when they saw
the number of people who had, they
signed," says Mrs. Machan. -
While waiting to present the
petition •to the new Conservative
leader, Mrs. Machan announced the
new goal for number of signatures
would be two million.
The petition was started by
Priscilla de Villiers whose daughter
Lina was murdered by a man who
was out on bail for sexual assault.
The Justice Committee has asked
CAVEAT to address the committee
when they consider new legislation
on sentencing and parole;
Last weekend Mrs. Machan
attended a meeting for° the Family
Transition Place, an Orangeville
abuse centre.
In its seven year existence, Tran-
sition Place has- served over 700
women and 1,000 children..
Speakers said it is the efforts cif
volunteers and front line workers
that make it possible to operate
such centres:. .
Mrs. deVilliers was present and
talked about efforts in the Hamilton
area to teach grade school children
how to speak out about violence
within the home. Presently' 18 ele-
mentary -schools have experts come
into the schools to talk about viol-
ence.- Break the Silence is a blue-
print for a program alinedat high
school ,level students. Mrs. Machan
said the goal is to change attitudes:
She also pointed out that CAVEAT
is attempting to have the govern-
ment seriously look at instituting a
Charter of Rights for Victims:
Anyone interested in adding their '
name to. the petition or getting
involved can call Mrs. Machan at
887-6701.
