Seal Campaign, supporting Ontario's children with physical disabilities, is here once again. One of the oldest and largest children's charities of its kind in North America, the Easter Seal Society has helped children with physical disabilities in Ontario since 1922. It delivers financial assistance for equipment; travel and treatment; recreational and educational pro- grams; diagnostic clinics in northern Ontario; parent/family support groups; respite care programs and in-home consultative services from a province -wide network of 36 district nurses. The Society also supports research into the causes, prevention and treatment of physi- cal disabilities. Children with physical disabilities do not live in a dream world. They are faced with harsh realities every minute of the day. Helping the children to live with realities and to achieve their personal milestones is an ongoing commitment of Easter Seals and one which the Lucknow & District Lions Club isproud- to be associated with. We are past the stage where the effects on a person's health caused by smoking are questioned. The whole range of proposals are up for public discussion. Some proposals are to discourage children from smoking. The strategy aims to reduce tobacco in Ontario by 50 per cent by the year 2000. To eliminate tobacco sales to minors and have smoke-free schools, workplaces and public places by 1995. More than 13,000 Ontarians die each year from tobacco use. People who quit smoking can expect to have improved health, including fewer sick days and health complaints, and to live longer than continuing smokers. The outright banning of smoking or the prohibition of the sale of tobacco would be unrealistic at this time. Some of the new initiatives would be a minimum package size which would discourage the sale of . five or 15 cigarette "kiddie packs". Another proposal would be to raise the legal age to 19 in order to pur- chase tobacco. This would allow the Age of Majority identification card to be used when purchasing tobacco. An issue which has been raised in a recent letter to the editor is the a4 sale of tobacco in pharmacies. Under the proposal the sale of BDO DUNWOODY WAKD MALLETTE CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS Ottering a full range of services: auditing, accounting, business planning, income tax planning; personal financial planning, computer-and,management services. The people who have the Drug Benefit card purchase drugs from the pharm'a'cy and these are paid for by the Minis- try of Health. Pharmacies are a special. type of retailer. In order that the pharmacies and the public get an opportunity to air their views on this issue I have sent copies of the proposals to all phar- macies in Huron County.
