There is support for AIDS victims in. Grey -Bruce Atom B's lose
by Nancy Harper
For sufferers of AIDS, their
friends and their families, hopeless-
ness and. helplessness are all too
common, But inGrey and Bruce
counties, there is a place to turn..
Public Health Nurse Marie
Barclay says a local program - the
only one of its kind in the area -
provides a "safe environment"
where people can feel ,comfortable
exploring their thoughts and feeling
for others. •
The- AID'S • Education and
Resource Program, created by the
Grey -Bruce -Owen Sound Health
Unit, focuses on. helping AIDS or'
HIV-infected patients in the area to
deal with the devastating conse-
quences of this disease.
"There is a tremendous amount of
sharing, a sense of relief and an
inner strength" Barclay says, that
comes with being able to talk to

others who are experiencing the
same pain.
Response from a monthly support
group has been "very. positive" in
terms of meeting the victims' emo-
tional needs and providing an outlet
for socializing.
But • because Grey -Bruce ` is
predominately a rural area with
fewer facilities than urban centres,
many people are unaware ,of the
counselling services that are avail-
able. Barclay says it's important for
people in this area to know there is
a place for them to turn for help.
Families and friends of AIDS -
infected people can also benefit
from the numerous individual and
• group counselling sessions offered
by the health unit.
"There are many people who have
heard about (AIDS.) but had never
had• it touch their lives before,"
--Barclay says.
It's important that these people, as
well as the actual victims them-
selves, have an opportunity to share
their feelings with others in the
same position..
The health unit also offers
counselling for people who simply
'want to understand more about
AIDS, as well as confidential test-
ing for those who fear certain sex-
•. ual behaviour or a particular life-
"sgrle may have put them in a high-,
risk group. '
"We have a large number. of
people coming in that -are wanting
just to clarify, wanting to be sure,"
Barclay explains:
She says the stigma' of 'being
tested for the disease is starting to
fade. More and mote people par-
ticularly heterosexual:.couples - are
getting tested. If only to put their
mind at ease.
A test can be obtained simply by
visiting a local physician or by

The Mid -Huron . Landfill .Site
Board will receive $30,000" from
the provincial government to' help
purchase a weigh scale for the site.
Luc Gagnon, treasurer for the
Town of Goderich, explained how
the grant will be used. "It's for one-
third of the $90,000 the scale will
cost," he said. "The other $60,000•
will comefrom the capital budget
of the landfill." •
The capital.budget is composed of
payments' from each municipality
that uses the landfill.site.
The purpose of the scales will be
to make people pay, by weight, for
.the Amount of garbage they bring to
the landfill, the hope being that if
people have to pay for what they
dump, they'll take measures to
produce less garbage.
Mr. Gagnon said, "The tenders
•• have been reeeivec '8ntt• "tht ' hope
to 'have the scale installed before
June 30. The rate (of payment by
.weight) will not come into effect
until January '94, so that will give
.us' six months to measure the
amount of waste coming in '
He said that by taking.six months
•of weight results, a reasonable rate,'
can be, fixed, rather than making an
estimate in June.
The grant for the scale is part of
Ontario's Waste Reduction Action
Plan. The Ministry of the Environ-
• • ment has set a goal for municipal-
' ities to reduce the amount of gar-
bage going to landfills by 50 per
cent by the year 2000.

contacting the health unit directly.
Blood samples are taken and sent
to the lab for processing, after
which they are returned, directly to
the physician - a process which
usually takes three weeks. Confi-
dentiality is maintained throughout
the entire procedure.
The health unit itself offers two
methods of testing. The fust
method, called nominal testing
means that a patient's name is
included on the requisition' that is
sent to the lab.
The second method, called non -
nominal testing, uses codes rather
than names to protect a' patient's
identity. Anonymous testing - avail-
able only in London or Barrie - can
be done without a person having to
give his or her name at all.
Test results - whether positive or
negative - are never given over the
phone, particularly because "post -
testing" counselling is an important,
part of the whole process.
Even if someone has tested nega-
tive for the disease, Barclay says
it's essential to follow up on, the
meaning of the result, She says
people who have tested negative
still need to know how to prevent
.AIDS and how to avoid being in
the same fearful situation again.'
Because research has uncovered
new treatments that may delay the
onset of AIDS once HIV the virus
that causes AIDS - has been diag-
nosed, early detection is crucial.
"The disease is not curable but it
is more manageable. There .is so
much more hope now on the hor-•
izon," Barclay says.
To date, 12 people in Grey and
Bruce counties have been diagnosed
with AIDS, but Barclay says that
number isn't a clear indicator of
how the disease has affected this
area. "

residing in Grey and Bruce when

she says.
"But it's a- misleading statistic.
Many individuals were diagnosed
somewhere else and have now
moved into the area to be with

robin series.
Wingham scored in the first and
again in the second to take a 2 to 0
lead.
Matthew Martin assisted by Peter
Nadasdy closed the gap • and
although the squad played well,
they just couldn't find the net.
Another late effort, they went down
in defeat with a 3 to 1 score.
