Separate school board plans in advance; budgets
from page
levelfar below that of the° Bruce
County board, which has dramati-
cally mcreased its debenture levet
over the past year. -
"Basically, we don't debenture
any more," Serre said, explaining
that the board plans all its projects
and equipment replacement far in
advance and budgets for them
accoidinely.
While the board's long-term
planning for energy efficiency and
debt reduction help make living
with tight budgets possible, Serre
said it's too early to redict this
year's mill rate. The board is still
waiting for final figures on the
Ministry of Education's 1993 grant
rate. It also has yet to calculate the
impact of market value assessment
in Bruce County.
Approved working budgets that
will be included in recommenda-
tions for the preliminary budget
include business administration at
$129,301; general administration
(excluding salaries and benefits) at
$136,053; and plant operation at
$358,000.
Midway school
Parents of separate school stu-
dents in Mildmay have good news
from the Bruce -Grey Separate
School Board. The aging two-storey
wing of the senior school in the
village will be replaced this fume'
mer.
Mildmay parents recently'obbiefd
the board with their concern about.
the fire hazard posed by the,
building's open wooden staircase.
They are also unt►appy that the 326
students are splii1into two buildings
on opposite sides of a sometimes -
busy street. "The constant back and
forth, from building to building, is
not only time consuming, and is not
very practical in inclement weather,
but could also prove dangerous with
traffic," said a letter signed by 55
parents. "The most dangerous of
situations is still the senior school,
with its open staircases constructed
of wood, which would, in the case
of a fire, burn like kindling," the
letter continued. "The safest and
long over due change in the form of
an addition to the junior school to
accommodate our wt q, snider!
body" is the recommendation par-
ents passed on to trustees.
Trustee Earl Weber said parents
are satisfied with the --news that the
19284ing will be replaced, even if
it means 'the students will still be
split in:. e. junior and senior school
buildings.:'
Trustees were told it would cost
$750,000 extra to put an addition
on the junior school. and that
"expense would boost taxes for all
supporters by 10 per cent.
"I explained it like that. They
don't want no part of increasing the
taxes," Weber said of the parents he
spoke to.
Plans now are to tear down the
1928 wing, which contains four
classrooms and office space, and
replace it with a $550,000 one -
storey addition to the existing 1964
wing. There are no plan drawings
for the addition available yet, but
the board hopes to go to tender
with the project in March so that
construction can begin in May for a
September completion.

pleased with the timing of the grant
that will allow the ,project to go
ahead. Noting the p nts' concerns
and the board's desire to bring the
building up to building code,
Brosky said replacing the old wing
"gets rid of all our problems."
Direct Help
Employees and school students in
the Bruce -Grey Separate School
Board system donated more than
$17,300 last year to impoverished
women and children in Peru, where
poverty and political violence make
life difficult and dangerous for
many.
Staff donated more than $11,000
from their paycheques, while the
schools and other donations
accounted for the remainder. Those
donations from staff and schools
accounted for more than half of the
total $32,523 raised by Direct Help
last year. Direct Help is a locally=
founded charitable organization that
sends monthly money orders to
women in Peru, to assist them in
buying the necessities of life for
their children.
After inspecting the gas piping in
all its schools, the Grey -Bruce
Separate School board has replaced
all the valves at gas outlets on
desks, in science classroom labs.
The inspection was ordered by the
Ministry of Education after an
explosion in Alliston. That
explosion was the result of
undetected corrosion of gas lines.
The board has also complied with
ministry orders and inspected hydro
conduits at all its buildings. Super-
intendent Paul Serre said all of the
problems detected were minor in
nature, and steps are underway to
correct them.

A video presentation showed the

that the program's focus is on a

Given the opportunity, a person in

Mr. Mayer said he has personally
