DIAMONDS celebrate end of first year
The DIAMONDS - united physi-
cally challenged people - have been
organized for a year. The purpose
of forming the non-profit group was
twofold: fust, to bring together
people with all types of disabilities,
40 provide friendship and under-
standing; and second to lobby local
politicians for a better comprehen-
sion of the problems faced by
physically challenged persons in
Huron County.
At their first meeting, Co -
Chairperson Glen McLachlan said:
"As far as the County is concerned,
we are onlyy one person; if we work
together, we are many."
Highlights of the year included
McLachlan's wheel-a-thon in May
1992, in which he and the DIA-
MONDS raised over $1,800 for
Children's Hospital of Western
Ontario. He is now planning a
swum -a -thou for May 1993 at the
Vanastra Community Centre to
raise more funds for the same
cause.
Accessibility and transportation
were two of the issues tackled by
the'DIAMONDS in their first year
of operation. A DIAMONDS Trans-
portation Committee was formed in
1992 at the suggestion of the Huron
County Board of Health. This com-
mittee serves as a resource for any
community wishing to start up a
specialized transit service in their
area.
The DIAMONDS presented two
certificates of accessibility. The first
in June 1992 went to Brent Wilson,
Sandra Reinhardt and Curt Cooper -
representatives of the Royal Bank
branch in Exeter. The second certi-
ficate was presented to Raymond
Scotchmer, Assistant Curator of the
Huron County Museum, in January
1993. The DIAMONDS intend to
give more access awards: in the
future.
Speakers attracted good attend-
ance at meetings. In October 1992,
Wilma Koopman, a former Seaforth
resident and now registered nurse
with the Neuromuscular Clinic at
London's Victoria Hospital, spoke
about the importance of communi-
cation between physically chal-
lenged people and health care pro-
fessionals. In January 19934Dr.
Bruce Thomson, a family phyician
in Goderich, spoke as both a health
care professional as well as a physi-
cally challenged consumer, and

stressed the need for a sense of
humour, and a "never give up"
attitude.
One of the biggest problems
encountered by the DIAMONDS
was providing transportation to
meetings for members who didn't
have their own 'vehicles or couldn't
use public transit. Many service
clubs, Legions, churches and other
organizations generously d¢nated
money to help with transportation
and other. expenses. Several access-
ible buildings were also loaned to
the DIAMONDS for their meetings,
which rotate around the County.
Co -Chairman Ron Airdrie hopes
mire people will become involved
with the DIAMONDS in the next
year, especially parents of physi-
cally challenged children. "It's the
kids who will benefit most in the
future from the things the DIA-
MONDS are working for," Airdrie
explained.
The DIAMONDS next meeting is
scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 13th
at ' 1:00 p.m. at the Lions Youth
Centre in Exeter, at which time the
election of new officers will take
place. For more information,
