With a num- ber of companies in fmancial diffi- culty the employees have shown that they want a stake trying to save the company. They are interested in owning and managing a company. Ontario has assisted a number of employee groups save the company and the jobs. Often employees or potential investors learn too late about a company in trouble. Rather than wait to deal with a company which is in a crisis situation the govern- ment has established a program which allows employees and other investors to buy into the company. The Ontario Investment & Employee Ownership Program has two choices for investment. As part' of an employee group,•you can buy into your company by forming an Employee Ownership Corporation. The employee group, must submit a business proposal to the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Technology. The benefits fon fhe,employee would be Ontario tax credits. They would be used to reduce a person's Ontario income tax. Like all invest- ments there is no Ontario govern- ment guarantee of success. Whether ,you are an employee or an investor in the Investment Fund there is risk.. The second option - is the Labour Sponsored Investment Funds. They Poaciling is a crime. A person can invest up to a maximum of $5,000 -per year in a Labour Sponsored Investment Fund and qualify for an Ontario tax credit of 20 per cent of the amount. invested .to a maximum credit of $1,000 per year. The result of the program will be new sources of capital for Ontario companies. It will provide tax credits for individuals and groups who invest in Ontario businesses. Judges for the competition were Lorraine Brophy, Madeline .Anderson and Margaret Hamilton. Senior division• winners included first, Shelly Johnston, second Brent Cameron, and third Taylor Mali. Other senior speakers were Cathy Cairncross, Michelle VanderVaart and Dennis Lubbers. Junior division winners. were first Rachael Bushell, second Meghan Martin and third Jayme Sutherland. Other junior speakers were Tory Westbrook, Heather Lootsma, Bridget Hogan, Meghan Martin, Tannis Chisholm and Nathaniel Bakelaar, Senior public speaking winners at the Legion competition last weekend were first Shelly -Johnston, second Brent Cameron and .third Taylor Mall.
