In fact, almost seven out of every ten daily smokers in Bruce and Grey counties would love to reduce or quit smok- ' ' ing. The question is "how?" Cold' turkey, hypnosis, acupuncture, laser therapy, and nicotine gum are to the smoker as thigh -master, • ski machines and exercise bikes are to the unsuccessful fitness enthusiast. .Now the nicotine patch, a new tool to assist smokers become smoke- free, is available. The nicotine patch works by, releasing a steady flow of nicotine hp the bloodstream. By eliminat- ing the nicotine peaks that smoking produces, the patch helps the moti- vated quitter get over the initial • withdrawal period by reducing the need for a cigarette. This lets the person concentrate on the psycho- logical and behavioral aspects of lighting up. For smokers, figuring out what to do with their hands without a cigarette, and learning how to deal with stressful situations without smoking, are just as import- ant as surviving the initial nicotine cravings. The patch can be prescribed by a physician in one of three strengths; 2L 14 and seven mgs. Generally, users start. at 21 mg for two to four weeks, then reduce to the 14 mg and seven mg patch for the same period of time. This eventually ' weans them off nicotine. Someone who is a lighter smoker may start at Making Health eair Happen UMIT 14 mg. It is important that a phys- ician monitor patients during this process and follow up on a regular basis. The patch is applied each day at the same time on a clean, dry, non - hairy part of -the body. The outer arm, chest or back provides the best locations. When removing the patch it should be folded in two. and discarded immediately. Store new and used patches in an area out of reach from children and pets. Although initial reports are prom- ising, the patch is not a miracle cure. Studies clearly indicate that without a stop -smoking support program the success rate of , the patch is cut in half. The Bruce -Grey Council on Smoking and Health has information on smoking cessation programs. Call your nearest Health Unit office for more information. Some side-effects have been noted and should be reported immediately to a physician. These may include skin rash or itching, insomnia,, headache and stomach 'upset. A resident of St. Thofnas, Mrs. Lawton's prize winning quilt was one of over 2;000 entries at 234 fairs. After winning at the Aylmer Fair, it competed'against 14 other district winners and has now been declared the best in Ontario: The quilt impressed the judges with its fine quilting stitches and excellent applique work. The choice of :colours compliments the ' 'Virginia Wreath' pattern. "It's terrific, it's out of this world!," expressed a jubilant Mrs. Lawton. "I began quilting when I eight years old to help my- grandmother. Now I enter one quilt a year in my local fair," she said. Mrs. Lawton won this competition before in 1980, and again in 1989. The cost of the patch may be covered by some medical insurance plans but at .$5.00 a day it is still. cheaper than a daily package of cigarettes. Although the patch can help many people, it should not be used by pregnant women, occasional smokers, children and people with heart problems. Smoking while wearing the patch is not recom- mended. If you are using the paes and can't quit, tell your ph tan. It may be best to aban- don the program and try again when you are ready. Most importantly, remember that the process of quitting smoking is a long-term commitment and should not be measured by the success or failure of one attempt. On average, smokers will try to quit three to six times before they achieve a smoke- free lifestyle. Making Health Happen is written by staff from BGOSHU. We wel- come your stories and ideas.
