Hospital board looks at
alignment of health council
by Mike Robinson
Looking at the alignment of a DHC (District Health Council) is the next
logical step. Wingham and District Hospital CEO Lloyd .Koch said the
general assumption is that Huron will have to join in with another DI -IC to
meet the population requirements. And, he said, the consensus is that
Huron -Perth seems to be the strongest case favoured.
Although members have yet to be named for a steering Committee to
examine the merits of, and to determine if Huron should have a DHC,
already there is talk of a joining of Huron and Perth in this venture. The
creation of a Perth. DHC has been put on hold pending on what happens
in Huron.
Mr. Koch noted a letter has been sent by a south Huron hospital noting
the joining might be a good idea.
Board member Bev Brown said she was impressed with her few contacts
with the Grey -Bruce DHC and asked if they might have a chance to see
a DHC in operation. It was noted that Huron and Perth already share a
number of joint health-related ventures.
Board chairman Doris Inglis, said the direction of the Ministry of Health
is focused on a Huron -Perth DI -IC or Huron joining in with another DHC.
She said there does not appear to be an option of a separate Huron DHC
since it does not meet the 100,000 population mandate.
Ms. Brown asked if there was an option to have a separate DHC yet
share a common secretariat.
Board member Ian Moreland asked if a decision by the Wingham
hospital would infringe on the steering committee.
Board member Doug Fortune said there was nothing wrong with voicing
an opinion.
Mrs. Inglis pointed out a decision was not required immediately, but said
she felt Huron's identity would not be lost in a Huron -Perth board.
Mr. Moreland favoured sending a letter once the DHC steering com-
mittee is established.
