Unit 2
On February 2, Unit 2 of
Lucknow UCW met at the home of
Elsie Houston. The theme of the
meeting was love.
Uru t leader Aliene Bradley
opeii d the meeting with a poem
"God's Love". •
Thirteen members answered the
rollcall with a bible verse on
"Love".
Ileen Lemoine and Lois Goodhue
took charge of the program. Mrs.
Goodhue opened with a verse "The
Discipline of Love" followed by
prayer and scriptures from Leviticus
and Corinthians.
Mrs. Lemoine in the devotions read
about love; it is difficult to define
but easy to demonstrate. Some
ways to show love are by sending
flowers, a smile, a word of thanks,
a card or a note. One woman shows
love to her neighbours by . giving
flowers or 'vegetables from her
garden to friends or the needy.
Hymns on love were sung and
Elsie Houston played two
instrumentals on the piano and also
play.ed for the hymns. Mrs.
Goodhue closed with prayer.
Mrs. Bradley conducted the busi-
ness period. The minutes on the last
meeting were read and approved.
The offering • received and dedi-
cated. The birthday jar passed and
the service for the least coin was
used. '
Mrs. Bradley read „from the
Mission magazine about Naomi
Centre for. Women in St. John's,
Newfoundland. It provides shelter
and counselling for women without
homes or families and often bat-
tered who need a bed and some
tender loving care. There are eleven
beds in Naomi Centre and a twelfth
in case an extra woman needs a bed
for a night.. There are several volun-
teers to help. Our Mission and
Service helps 'with the funding.
Counsellors . help with the day to
day care and with the education.
The theme for the home is Love -
Non Judgemental.

They don't suffer from the winter blahs
"Come on, you can get tt over Me
net!" The sixth, seventh and eighth
graders competed in a volleyball
tournament on January 22. The
girls' team won third place and the
boys' team won fourth place. Con-
gratulations!
"...Honorable judges, teachers, --
.and fellow students..." You've
guessed it. It's that time of year
again: At LDCS grades four
through eight are working . on
speeches. The topics range from •
grandparents, to war, to trouble.
How can you conserve? Ask any
student this question, and you'll, get
lots of answers. On February 3, Mr.
Haley, from Ontario Hydro, visited
the school: He told everyone about
using energy wisely and ways, to
conserve it. He gave us lots of good
ideas.
We'd like to send a warm .wel-
come to Miss Luimes. She is the
new Grade 1/2 teacher, as Mrs.
Nonkes is taking a maternity leave.

Kindergarten is celebrating love month
February is love month in Kinder-
garten. Lovely the Care -Cat came
to visit with us. We hope he will
stay with us even after February.
We are looking forward to many
love crafts and stories. There are
four birthdays this month: Ashton,
Steven, Melanind Michael.
The Grade 1 class is listening to
many fairy tales and acting them
'out. We are ready to begin Fairy
Tales centres. We have found out in
our weather unit how clouds are
made, and we discovered the tem-
perature under snow is warmer than.
on top of snow. On the computer
we are using the program "What is
Weather?" Justin is "Special Me"
this week, and we are all trying to
help others this "Heart" month.
Happy Birthday' to Ashley, our
second seven year old.
The Grade 2/3 class had a won-
derful day at the Wawanosh Nature
Centre on January 25. We learned
many things about birds and every-
one enjoyed snowshoeing in the
afternoon. We are just about done
.our winter bird unit Many students
have'completed a'number of winter
bird activities.
The Grade 3/4 class finally fin-
ished their Australia centres that
they .have been working hard at.
Their surprise guest speaker turned
out to be Mr. Stanley, who told
them all about his trip to Australia
and showed slides.
The Grade 4/5 class went to the
Bruce Nuclear Power Development.
Ls INSIDER
We went on a bus tour around the •
plant and saw a few deer. We also
played some electronic games that
had to do' with• electricity at the
Information centre. The birthdays
this month are: Thora Cooper, Ellen
Husk, Danielle Stanley and Laura
Sande. Happy Birthday everyone.
Speeches, novel studies and tam-
: ily treasures have kept Mrs. Black's
Grade 5/6 class ..busy for the past
few weeks. After all this hard work
it was decided we should experi-
ence a fad for each Friday in Febru-
ary. These fads are as follows:
Bubble Gum Day, Hat Day, Back-
wards Day, and Wear Black Day
(their favorite colour, naturally). We
think this will keep the February
blahs away. Congratulations to
Paula Kwan ' for being . elected as
class representative for the Student
Council.
The Grade 7/8 classes are both
preparing for tests; geography (7)
on Friday, February 12, and history
the next week. Andrea Hiller and
George Carter have been selected
by their classmates to be their rep-
resentatives on the Student Council.
We look forward to their reports on
upcoming student activities.
The Grade 8 has for some time
now been involved with an ambi-
tious English project, that of
becoming an expert about a chosen
creature. To become so informed,
there is a need to become a good
researcher. With the help of our
number one resource teacher, Mrs.
Maclntyre, we are learning this
worthwhile skill. Our voyage into
the past continues. Currently, we
are docked in Canada during the
1860's. People then, as today, were
concerned about government and
the policies they were attempting to
promote. Do we never learn from
our experience's?
Regional Volleyball Tournament
The girls' and boys' school vol-
leyball . teams participated in a
regional tournament in Kincardine
on February 3. Both teams were
very competitive and narrowly
missed bringing home the winning
pennants. Members of the girls'
team include: Andrea Hiller, Kim
Harper, Shelley Johnston, Kristi
Cranston, Corrie Lynn Kranenburg,
Lisa MacLean, Lisa Kwan and
Jessica Redford.
Boys' team members were: Daryl
Aitchison, Jonathan Austin, Shawn.
Tilbury, Lucas Thacker, Taylor
Mali, Sean Lougheed, Jonathan
MacKinnon, George Carter, Richard
Waike, Gavin Colwell and Ean
Moffat. Congratulations on a fine
showing of volleyball skills and
good sportsmanship.
