truck 'worth $6,000.
On Feb. 6, OPP received a hunt-
ing complaint from a residence on
Concession 7 in Kincardine Town-
ship after a woman called to report
hunters on her property.
As a result, two men from the
Detroit, Michigan area have been
charged with tresspassing to hunt
under the Game and Fish Act.
Also on Feb. 6, OPP received a -
report of a mailbox stolen from a
residence on Concession 9 of
Kinloss township.

skates worth $200 were reported
stolen.
They were taken from a vehicle
that was left unlocked in a ditch the
night before.
Early settlers
spoke French
The guest speaker of the January
meeting of The Bruce and Grey
Branch of The Ontario Genealogical
Society was Andrew Armitage, the
chief librarian, of the Owen Sound
Public Library.
History shows that this area's
European settlers,in the east around
the Penetanguishene Peninsula,
were mainly French speaking.
Many of their neighbours were of
Scottish origin with some of them
coming via the Arctic, originally to
the Selkirk settlement in Manitoba
and then coming east with many of
them settling in present day Simcoe
County. The Queens Bush was the
name given to Bruce and Grey
Counties. It was heavily populated
by Scottish emigrants. There was
also a heavy concentration of Ger-
man speaking settlers centred in the
Neustadt area.
After the early 1800s the popula-
tion in this area began to decline.
Usually the eldest son got the fam-
ily farm . and the younger ones left
with many of them heading west to
the prairies. Gaelic was spoken in
many a home, church and at school.

Ban remains in effect
Bruce County School board
trustees say a total ban on alcohol,
tobacco and drug use on board
property will remain in effect, in
spite of some policing problems.
Trustee Ray Fenton says the
board is "biting the bullet" and
standing by its ban in spite of criti-
cism over enforcement.
"We have taken flak from within
and without over this policy,"
Fenton said, but he added "It is a
valid and courageous policy."
The review of the drug, alcohol
and tobacco ban was prompted by

especially over slinking, at review,' ` '
Fenton said.
The ban covers students, staff and.
the public using any board property
at any time. It also covers students,
staff and chaperons on field trips.
Fenton said every school has had
some student suspensions for viol-
ations of the ban since it was intro-
duced two years ago, but the big
issue now is safe supervision of
students who have moved their
smoke breaks off board property. In
some cases, those breaks are held
on roadsides.
