BUSINESS BEAT
by Pat. Livingston.
Peter Steer •of Lucknow has
opened what he calls "a side line
business" in his store on Campbell
Street.
Pete's fishing and archery centre
doesn't really go .hand-in-hand with
appliances, but it was a natural
avenue for him to explore since he
is an avid fisherman and hunter
himself. He believes there are many
like himself in the area who want to
be able to buy their supplies locally.
Pete says he's been fishing since
he was four years old and devel-
oped his interest in archery in 1970.
His past accomplishments include
Canadian Bare -Bow Archery Cham-
pion and Ontario champion for four
years. His last competition was in
1977. He said the necessity of
travelling to the states for most of
the competitions was instrumental
in removing himself from that
circle. He does however continue to
hunt with a bow.
Most of the fishing equipment is
top quality other than a few basics
for kids. In the archery side, he will
carry top quality compound bows to
kids' starter archery kits.
Another service Pete will offer, is•
custom built arrows.
Hours presently are "catch him
when you can" or in the evening if
he's at home, or call him at 528-
2946 and leave a message.

Phone company moves- to new building
If you call the Huron and Kinloss
Municipal Telephone System office
the phone will no longer ring in the
Huron Street office in Ripley.
Instead, it will ring- in its new.
facility on 60 Queen Street where it
relocated just •over two weeks ago.
The new facility combines the
two buildings that were , formerly
used on Huron Street and Christina
Street.
Glenn Grubb, general manager of
the company said the system had
been in the Huron Street office
since 1945 and it was starting to get
cramped as the company grew,

with the trucks and equipment.
Mr. Grubb said the staff depended
on radio, telephone and memos to
communicate back and forth when
it had to provide a service to one of
its 3,500 customers.
The company extends from north
of Kincardine and Kincardine
Township to Colborne Township on
the .south side of Port Albert. '
"Now we can walk down the hall
and get things moving a lot more
simply," said Mr. Grubb.
On June 9, Mr. Grubb said ten-
ders closed on the construction. J
and J Construction from Bayfield
'started the work on the building
from plans developed by architect
Don Snider of Snider; Reichard and
March from Waterloo:
The facility is staffed by three
people in the office, four who do
the outside work and Mr. Grubb
with a garage for trucks and equip-
ment, offices and . even a small
museum.
Just inside the building,' beside the
front entrance is an -old wooden
phone booth. Also on display in the
office are four Magneto switch-
boards where operators used to sit
andconnect the calls coming in to
the switchboard.
The switchboards had been used
from 1911, when the company first
opened, until the early 1960's when
it switched to dial telephones.
Also available in the building is a
new display wall for the different
styles of telephones offered.
The official open house for the
building is this Friday. Tours of the
new facility willbe offered along
