The business is now located in the for- mer commercial banking office of the Bank of Montreal. Going back further for former residents, where Sandersons Clothing and Dry Goods was located for many years. Annual meetings are the common practice for organizations and churches at this time of the year as they pause to look over their suc- cesses of the past year and plan for future activities. Sunday evening, members of the Lucknow and South Kinloss churches met for a contemporary worship service and communion in the Lucknow Presbyterian Church. Carrothers - Cliff and Diane (nee Miltenburg) are delighted with the safe arrival of their son, Samuel Clifford, weighing 7 lbs. on Decem- ber 24, 1992 at Victoria Hospital, London: He is a wee brother for Gordon and another grandson for Florence and Cliff Carrothers, R.R. 3, Lambeth and Ries and Marie Miltenburg, R.R. 7, Lucknow. 4..H NEWS Sap Suckers On January 30, the 4-H Maple Syrup club met for their first meet- ing, at the Lucknow United Church. Twelve people attended Election of officers resulted in Tiffany Bridges as president, Jennifer Weber as vice, . Josh Leeman as secretary, Christina Hatherley as press reporter, and Michelle Mitchler for telephone convener. Leader for this 4-H project, spon- sored by the Kairshea Women's Institute, is Sharon Weber.. During the meeting members learned how to identify different trees, how and when to tap the trees, what the pipeline is and how to set it up, and what to avoid while tapping trees. Then we learned about vacuum pumps, two systems, washing the tubing and marking it for future use. Lottery winners. Last week's winners in the Ripley Lions cash calendar lottery were: John Stecho, Kitchener; Isabel Brook, Ripley; Doug and Carolyn Bechtel, Waterloo; Dale and Joanne Walden, London; John and Jean VanRooy, R.R. 3, Goderich, and John Dahmer, R.R. 4, Kincardine with $50 each. 'The $100 winner was Diane Picot of Kincardine. WMS O will study Middle East. Marjorie MacLean was hostess for the January meeting of the Ashfield Women's Missionary Society. Seven members answered the rollcall with the payment of fees and a New Years thought. Helen MacLennan and Frances Nugent were in charge of the i pro- gram. Mrs.. MacLennan led in the devotionals. The title of)her medita- tion was A New Year's Resolution. God in Christ has forgiven us all our past and we need to "forget those things which are behind." But we must constantly remember - all that He did, all that He said, and especially all that He is. Mrs. MacLean gave a summary of the Presbyterial Annual Meeting held in Wingham. Mrs. MacLennan reviewed the Glad Tidings. Mrs. Nugent very capably intro- duced the Study Book for 1993 on the Middle East. It consists of 16 different countries, the largest being Israel, Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia. This was the birthplace of Christi- anity with the highest population being Arabs and two -thuds being under the age of 20 years. As we are looking for newspaper and magazine articles, we are to dwell on the people and the churches instead of war. Mayme Wilkins read the minutes of the last meeting. Elaine Collins was appointed to the nominating committee. A card of thanks was received from the Children's Aid of Goderich for the Christmas dona- tion. We wish a speedy recovery to our faithful member June Wylds, who is recovering from knee surgery. A sympathy card was sent tothe family of Hazel Bateman. The next meeting will be held at Judy MacKenzie's on February 15 at 1:30 p.m. Each member is asked to bring two cards. Ladies perform 'building bridges' at UCW meeting Deanna Reavie, president of the Lucknow UCW, welcomed 17 ladies to the general meeting on January 28. The leadership commit- tee was in charge. Lois Walden opened with ,prayer and Ella Hackett gave the scripture. Anne Anderson gave a reading entitled Love and Marriage and closed with a prayer. A musical number, Take Time to be Holy, was sung by Elaine Steer. Alice Ritchie dedicated the offer- ing. Building Bridges was the name of the skit performed by Bev Thompson and Mrs. Reavie. Gwen Lennips read an issue from Canadian Living on Men Talk, Women Talk. Hymn singing interspersed the Mrs. Reavie opened the business portion by reading The Power of "Words. Elsie Houston brought her archi- vist albums and `UCW scrapbook for perusal. Three ladies from the UCW will take part in the worship service at the World Day of Prayer held at the Christina Reformed Church on March 5. The annual meeting of the Bruce Presbytery . will • be held in Southampton on March 5. • - Plans are in the process for the Thankoffering for late April or early May. The next general meeting .will be May 18. Mrs. Reavie welcome her new slate of officers for the year and closed with Thoughts for the New program. Year. Junior WI members learn about RRSPs and RRIFs Rod McDonagh of McDonagh Insurance was the guest speaker for the January meeting of the Lucknow Junior Women's Institute. He spoke to the group in his role as investment, broker on the topic of Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs). An interesting stat- istic is that.. in 1991, $14.6 billion dollars was invested in. RRSPs by approximately 4.5 million Cana- dians. . There .are two basic p see f a RRSP. One is as a retirem n o because people can no longer depend on government or even some company pension plans. Another is to defer paying tax on the money invested in the plan and on the interest which is com- pounded in it. UCW The Huron Perth Presbyterial of the United Church Women held its annual meeting on January 18, at Wingham United Church. One hundred and sixty-three ladies attended. The theme for the meeting was "You are..." and was portrayed through various reports. Area ladies holding officers' positions include Betty Graber, Brussels •as president; Susan Howson of Blyth, stewardship and fiance; Nancy Corrigan, Bluevale, Christian development. Area regional presidents are Huron North Barbara Anderson, Belgrave; Huron East, Rae McFarlane, Bayfield; and Huron West, Phyllis Cox, Goderich. term, or can be. transferred to a different institution. Future unclear for RNA school by Cameron Woods The future of the Wingham Nurses Assistants' School remains unclear. The school faced closure last year, but appeals to keep it open led to further discussion at the govern- ment level. However, after meeting with Huron MPP Paul Klopp, any word regarding the school from the , Ministry of Health has yet to come. Members of the school executive and the hospital board met with Mr. Klopp in December. At that time he assured them he would get word from Francis Lankin, the Ontario health minister. As of last Thursday's hospital board meeting, Mr. Klopp had yet to inform the local contingent of any decision. In the meantime, the school has been given the green light to pro- ceed with recruittbent and planning for the next semester.
