A positive attitude and a belief in
your product form the base for.
Bernice Glenn's success as a
Tupperware Home Parties Manager.
In January 1980, Bernice, the
mother of four, was searching for
employment where she could set
her own hours around her family.
She found that- convenience with
Tupperware. .
,Bernice sees a bright future ahead
in her business. "How many people
work for a company that carries a
lifetime guarantee.against cracking,
hipping and peeling on a product?
When you purchase Tupperware
brand products, you are investing in
a product once and once only," says
Bernice..
"Tupperware promoted 'environ-
mentally friendly' products long
before the term became so familiar.
More and more people realize that
by using Tupperware products they
too can reduce, re -use and recycle.
My company promotes 'shop the
eco -way' - take your containers to
the store to be filled," says Bernice.
"Today's woman is so busy,"
Bemice says, "that shopping 'at
home is a great convenience that is
truly appreciated by her." In-home
parties are the 'in' thing according
to Bernice, who uses different
themes in her presentations. They
are designed to fit the consumers'
needs - cupboard organizations,
refrigerator and freezer presenta-
tions, bridal showers, fundraising
for groups (one group raised $954)
and the favourite being microwave
cooking demonstrations.
"Tupperware is thecadillac of
plastics," says Bernice, "and I'd be
delighted to share that information.
with anyone interested in becoming
a consultant or having a presenta-
tion."

Provides a service /or community,..
Bev Thompson, of Thompson
Investments, has always derived
satisfaction from employment that
allowed her to provide a service for
the community.
Following the sale of The
Lucknow Sentinel, Bev and her
husband, Don, were looking for a
new :business, but one that
demanded less of their time. They
decided on the investment business
and since 1980 have acted as agents
for a number of trust companies
selling long and short term
Guaranteed Investment Certificates,
Registered Retirement Savings
Plans, and Registered Retirement
Income Funds.
Bev likes the association she has
with the pub1 c. She says, "In this
time of recession and low interest
rates, everyone needs to invest their
money where they are going to get
the best return and have security as
well. Dealing with local business
people makes the public feel more
comfortable. We offer an excellent,
community service and are unique
because it is not necessary for our
clients to travel to the city for
investment counselling.
Bev said women in business is
not a new concept. Since 1947,
when she came to Lucknow, there
have been many women involved in
business with their husbands.
"When the public referred to the
business, they called it 'his'. store.
Women did not receive the credit
they were due," says Bev.

Bev's . retail experience stems
back to when she was a young
child of 10 and helped out in her
parents' retail clothing business.
Her adult business career - newspa-
per, stationery store, retail and'
wholesalelottery sales -,has always
been in partnership with her hus-
band.
For many years, Bev was very
active in Girl Guides and during
that time was involvedwith open-
ing two retail Guiding stores where
uniforms, books etc., are sold to
members.

Sew and save...
The mother -daughter team of
Doris Culbert and Joanne Weber
opened their business, The, Sewing
Box, almost 10 years ago. Both are
experienced seamstresses, who in
1983 believed that Lucknow and
the surrounding area was large
enough to support a retail sewing
store.
In addition to the retail end of the
business, these two partners are a
life-saver for non -sewers as they
offer an alteration and mending ser-
vice, along with custom sewing and,
quilt making. Doris and Joanne
regularly attend trade shows and
classes to keep abreast of new,
faster methods and new products.
Doris said, "Lack of enough time is
a problem; there are so many things
we would like to do - more classes,
store samples."
Joanne said, "We like the people
and the variety of this business, and
are only too glad to help our cus-
tomers with any sewing questions."
With home decorating so popular
and companies producing simple,
inexpensive patterns, Joanne sees
more consumers creating their own
customized rooms. Quilt making
continues to be very strong, with
new people learning this old craft.
Utilizing many fast new methods,
Joanne said "You can create a quilt

'sewing clothing has always been
popular, I believe it will gradually
increase because customers can
have good quality, a better fit and
lower prices."
Doris is the mother of six
children, who farmed with her late
husband, Howard, at R.R. 1,

sible for the farm books. Over the
years Doris taught 21° 4-H clubs.
She now resides in Lucknow and
her two sons look after the farm.

Serves a varied market...
Nancy Penner has been in the life
insurance business since 1981. In
1988 she formed Lake Huron Life
Insurance Agencies Inc., which has
allowed here to grow and serve her
own clientele.
The market she serves is a varied
one. Nancy writes a lot of disability
for farmers, life products for young
couples, and investments.
The people aspect of the business
is important to Nancy. A person
who has continued her studies
through the University of Toronto ..,
and Life Underwriters Association,
she dislikes the fact that some
agents do not qualify themselves
through education. "The moreyou
know, the better you can service
your client," says Nancy.
The future is bright for Nancy
who will complete her Chartered
Life Underwriters designation in
July and then continue studying to
become a Chartered Financial Con-
sultant. •
. A. mother of two teenaged
children, Nancy finds it a challenge
to juggle business and personal
schedules. °
"In the past," Nancy says, the life
insurance industry has been male -
dominated. I see being in this busi-
ness as a positive. I will be the first
female Chartered Life Underwriter
in a wide area."
Nancy Penner
Nancy attributes ' the increasing
number of women in business to
the economic times. "Not only is
the cash required to meet family
income needs, but where else can
you raise your children and work
around your own personal schedule,
other than starting your own busi-
ness," states Nancy.
The accidental death of her hus-
band in 1984 "cemented" Nancy in
the business. She remarried in 1991.
For Nancy, life insurance sales has
been her "calling."
