uth pleads guilty to Mitchell arson
by Michele Green
MITCHELL - The youth charged
in connection with the December 11
fire at Mitchell District High School
pleaded guilty to arson charges on
-Friday in Youth Court, Criminal
-Division, Stratford.
The.. youth, who cannot be ident-
ified under the Young Offender's
Act, will be sentenced in February.
The defence requested a presen-
tence report be submitted. It will
outline the youth's character and
history and will be considered in
determining the sentence.
Following the youth's guilty plea
to Judge Garry Hunter on Friday,
Crown Attorney Doug Page told the
court he wasn't going to move the
case into adult court. He described
the events surrounding the fire.
During the afternoon of December
10, the youth was expelled from
school Later that day, the youth
told friends about the expulsion and
the topic of discussion was how to
get back at the ,principal, said
Crown. Attorney Page.
That evening, a party was field at
the youth's apartment where alco-
holic beverages were consumed.
After midnight, the youth left the
apartment with an adult, carrying
two empty wine bottles and a
ringette stick. They unsuccessfully
tried to siphon gas from vehicles
parked downtown. They then went
to the adult's place of employment
to obtain gas and filled the bottles
with it. The two continued walking
and went to the rear of the high
school where the youth stuffed
rages in the top of the bottles to
serve as wicks. They proceeded to
the' east side of the school where
the window of the French class-
room was broken. Crown Attorney
Page said the youth lit the wicks
and threw the bottles into the
school.
The youth told two. people at the
apartment that the school was in
flames and explained how it was
done. At 7. a.m., other people from
the party smelled gasoline on the
coat of the youth.
At 2:13 a.m. on December 11, the
Sebringville OPP and the Mitchell
Police Department responded to the
school's alarm which is activated
by heat. The Mitchell Volunteer
Fire Departmentfought the blaze.
Crown Attorney Page described to
the court the extent of the damage,
which- is pegged at $750,000.
The youth- was arrested in
Stratford by the Sebringville OPP
on' December 14.
The youth's defence counsel told
the court there is some discrepancy
about who threw ,the wine bottles
into the classroom. The French
room held no significance to the
client and was not specially picked
to burn. Also, he said that the
youth's. peers made Little effort to
discourage the youth's intentions.
"It's a case where [the youth's]
peers could have been a little. more
'supportive," he said,
Ideas suggested to get back"at the
principal were soaping windows
and spray paining graffiti on the
school, but escalated to the idea of
burning the school.. Defence told
court that burningthe school was
not his client's idea.
A representative from the Perth
County Board of Education also
spoke to the court. Although the
insurance will pay for the majority
of the cleanup and reconstruction,
the board has a $25,000 deductible
for which it will seek compensation.
