County 'and Sewellcommission may butt heads
There could be some "head-butt-
ing'?
head-butting" over philosophical differences
as Bruce County tries to integrate
its new official plan with the Sewell
Corrlmiss'ion's version of develop-,
trient,a according to Malcolm
McIntosh, Bruce County -planning
director.
"Some things in the Sewell report
make a lot of sense," McIntosh
said, "hut we might run up against
philosophical differences. They're
urban and we're rural."
Bruce is just beginning to work
on a new official plan it hopes will
be in place by the end of 1994. In
the meantime, it will respond to the
'Sewell Commission at a public
forum. in Owen Sound on February
18 and 19.
Speaking at county council's
January 19 meeting, M,eIntosh said
he hopes for strong turnout at The
forum.
"More than likely when we deal
with the Sewell Commission, 'I'm
sure, a lot of these things will be
detailed," said the planner, referring
to proposals for changes in rural
development regulations,
Among those changes are recom-
mendations for all development to
be on water and sewer services, and
minimum two -acre rural lots.
The county is ,An record as'
endorsing 50 -acre farm severances,
a move that could be at odds with
the Sewell report.
While some council' members are
afraid Sewell's made-in=Toronto
policies will block all rural develop-
ment, Mcintosh hopes for flexibility
so the county can plan ,for its own
needs. • 4s,
"You still have to allow local
communities define themselves,"
McIntosh said.
