Tips to seniors for a' safe winter For many, winter is thought 'of fondly. It may conjure up memories of sleigh rides over fields of sparkl- ing snow, staking on a glittering outdoor ice rink on .a sunny after- noon or simply enjoying a walk on a crisp, . clear night to savour the fresh air and winter quiet. P For some people however, the enjoyment of winter may change. Slippery walkways and roads, haz- ardous driving conditions, hypothermia from the cold and social isolation can turn winter into a stressful time of year. I hope the following prevention tips will help 5 you to have a happier, healthier winter. 1) To help reduce the increased risk of falls .due to winter condi- tions, be sure to wear winter cloth- ing and boots that are both light weight and properly fitting. Be sure your vision and freedom of .move- ment are not hampered. ' 2) When you are out walking, take extra care at intersection& Bright clothing can make you more visible to drivers. 3) If you use a cane or a walker, a special spiked device.. is available to put at the base, in order to give a better "footing" and reduce slip - HOBBYISTS & CARPENTERS Brad MDL #NBOl0a30 1! 0 00 >S' to 1 v: Capacity • 13 l . Be aware of temperatures and wind chill factors and limit your expo- sure. Maintain a comfortable "tem- perature" in your home (minimum of 20 C). Avoid drafty areas and maintain a regular• exercise routine to stay in shape and improve circu- lation. 6) Enlist the help of a family member, friend or student to help keep your outside steps and sidewalk clear of ice and snow. 7) Offer the hie of your home for a meeting of your clubs or groups during the winter months. 8) Use the telephone more often.
