Claudia said that younger people or those exposed to computer tech- nology have no trouble using the PAC. Others still tend to ask for her assistance. Claudia attributes this to the differences in users, citing as an example that seniors are not so much into researching as they are pleasure reading. The PAC is "fantastic" she said in searching for speciality type materials or titles by favourite authors: If the book isn't available locally, but is in the .system, it normally can be 'obtained for a patron within a week. Book drop " For many years, patrons and the supervisors have recognized the need for a book drop. The physical structure of the building made it difficult to install one, necessitating a free-standing drop. When Cargill built a new library, Lucknow was able to obtain their free-standing book drop, using part of the Lions Ladies donation. Claudia said it is well used and has provided a great convenience for people, especially out-of-town patrons. Librarians It is interesting to note that since the inception of a library • in Lucknow, there have been only 10 librarians which included Walter Treleaven, Robert Graham, Miss Louise Treleaven, Mrs. A.E. Marshall, Marion Peterson, Violet Rathwell, Ellen Ritchie, Lorna GUay, Fran McQuail and the pres- ent Claudia Baskerville. • Claudia took over as branch supervisor in October of 1991, although she had been working in the Bruce County system for many years prior. ' She and her family moved here from Ottawa in 1984 and she refers to her work as -a librarian as her second career. Her first was as a journalist having been employed by the Ottawa Journal, TV ,Guide in Toronto • and Vancouver, and McGraw Hill Ryerson Publishing: Work as a journalist was not con- ducive to raising a young family, so Claudia changed fields and emphatically declares, "I love library work!" Claudia is currently engrossed in a 10 -course Excel Certificate Pro- gram by correspondence, through the Southern Ontario Library Ser- vice.,Working on the sixth course, she is studying how, to best serve the needs of young adults through the library: Budgetary restraints last year did affect, the local branch. The pages were lost andthe book budget; cut to a point where extremely few new books could be purchased. Martin Tupper every, patrons do have regular access to Block Books, which are the new bestseller hardcovers. "Book dona- tions have enabled me to offer patrons a variety of reading," said Claudia. "I am always looking for good quality paperbacks, clean and in good condition," she said. The yearly book sale and ongoing in -library , sales generate funds which are used, for such things as a bulletin . board, a new cart (partly funded;by Lions Ladies) and maga- zine rack. If extra funds become available, Claudia said they ran be sent to the . county to put in a reserve fund and used by the local library later. "Service clubs have been wonderful in terms of support- ing the' library," In summing up the performance of the 'library, Claudia said, "We are a -public library serving the - general population. I personally' think that the public library system, and in particular Bruce County is a good one because of the option of calling upon a revolving system." "Considering the population and funds at our exposure, we have very good resources; that's not to say I wouldn't like to see •improve: ments ° We 'do --the best with what we have." .• And surely that's all Andrew Carnegie would ask for ' if he were here today: Please allow extra time for delivery during special. e• Special Offer: January 13th to January 19th/93 .
