Temperatures reached 10 degrees celsius Monday. Teachers were hoping that the chicken pox, flu 'and cold viruses had eased over the holidays, but with the changeable weather condi tions were not holding their. breath. The Sentinel editor paid a visit to one of the schools to check out. student's reactions to holidays and returning -to the three r's. Why then do some children have more success than others? Teenagers • in our, society have difficulty in dealing with the chal- lenges of life. They -are faced with constant change, their 'bodies and their emotion's cause many prob-. _terns.. Not. only _that,. they must deal. with parents and other adults giving unclear "signals" about what is expected of them. Mixed messages and body changes reek havoc with young people and may- lower their self esteem. Low self esteem sets them up for - failure. They have trouble solving .problems and may even get into more difficulty. as they muddle though. Then on, the other hand, high self • esteem gives your teen the courage to change. his behavior and to keep trying to solve his problems as they happen. He soon begins to feel successful. Although as parents we can't control how our teen solves his problems, we can certainly .influ- ence his self esteem or his belief in himself. We' can start by being good role models :and.displaying the same responsible behavior we expect from him. e can also create a secure fam- ,i1S, situation in which our teens are important members of the group. You are not the "big boss" but a team player who listens , to and respects what input the teen offers. For example, try checking your teen's knowledge beforebuj'ingl"a new' high tech piece of equipment for the family. His. expertise might sutprise you and in return he feels involved in the family decision and will be more responsible in caring - for the equipment. You have cre- ated a situation where trust and confidence grows and flourishes with each decision in which the teen contributes, Continue to help your teen's self esteem -by encouraging .him to com- plete tasks by offering words of .encouragement, "you can do it." "That's coming along great." Focus ,on your teen's positive efforts. •(Accentuate the positive - so the song says)., Notice small steps towards positive change ,and . give him reinforcement.,. "Your math mark has improved, soon the other subjects will catch up." "1 know it turntopage7 •Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, January 6, 1993 - Page 3 BARRY W.
