. She'd: love to drop in for a carp of tea
from page 1
-and everyone who has kept in touch •
with me through the year or now at
Christmas, also Alma Black. 1
• really enjoy hearing from you all
and being brought up to date with
local and family news. The distant
relative, Rosemary Robb, that
Dorothy enquired about is now
married with two children and
diving away from our Dungannon. I
was very pleased to be able, with
help, to put Phyllis in touch with a
church that had records of her
family tree going away back years
and years. I'm glad Mabel's family
is so good to her, especially now
that Irene is goneand that Henry is
so good .to his mother, who also
sent me news of Mr. and Mrs.
Oliver McCharles. So you see, I
keep well in touch. I wish, though;
that I could pop in on you all now
and then for a chat and a cup of.
tea.
My husband and I didn't go any-
where this year. He was in hospital
briefly and is to go back later on
but keeps quite well. We're quite
happy to stay near home and lead a
quiet life. I have at last given up
most of my voluntary work so no
more rushing about for me but the
rest of the family makes up• for my
laziness. Our son has just been
home, looking well and handsome.
and very happy, with hardly time to
breathe. He lives- in London, trans-
lating books from German, French,
Spanish and Italian and is also
involved with television. After
holidaying in Crete, he's been con-
ferring, with one of his authors in
Munich, then, having flow back
from Germany, he was' off to Italy
to . research the Renaissance in
Florence and Mantua for a pending
television programme. Most of his
work is above my head but I get
enormous pleasure from hearing all
about it. He lives in quite a differ-
ent world from ours, busy, busy.
Bombs apart, 6'hr Dungannon is
very gentle and quiet. When he's
home, he walks everywhere because
the air is so good here, he says.
•
My brother was home from Cali-
fornia in September, following the
marriage of his beautiful daughter
who is now a professor of medi-
'eine. He'd only been gone a few
days when 'my sister took off for
six months with her daughter and
family in Melbourne, Australia, so
us apart, everybody seems to be
playing General Post. Even our next
door neighbours have taken off for
Christmas with their daughter and
family in New Hampshire, USA.
They arrived just in time for those
dreadful storms:
With the whole world on the
move and travel so easy now, we're
hoping to see some of our Canadian
friends in 1993. Come on, every-
body. You haven't really lived until
you've seen the ORIGINAL
Dungannon. Don't let the Troubles
put you off. You'll not meet kinder,
friendlier people anywhere and with
things the way they are at home
and abroad, 'I don't suppose you'd
be in any more danger here than
anywhere else. And you'll never
see anywhere as green!
Many good wishes to you all and
love from your friend,
Mollie Whiteside.

Became a pen pal in 1975
Proud page 1 .
In 1975, Mrs. Whiteside began
pen pal correspondence with area
residents. As a fireeland'ewriter,
she promoted the "twinning" of,
the two Dungannons.
In August of 1980, when
Dungannon, Ontario, celebrated
its 125th birthday, Mrs.
Whiteside was a guest of honour
and was able to.personally meet
many friends she had made
through correspondence.
Since that. time people here
have kept her up-to-date on the
goings on, 'and she in return has
submitted a Christmas letter for
publication.
. Mrs. Whiteside, wha served
with the Women's Auxiliary Air
Force during the war, has-been a
Legion member since the early
1960s. During , that time she
served as a member of the
Executive Committee for many ,
years, and was Branch Secretary
until 1991.
She was a member of the Area
Council representing ,Mid Ulster
District from. 1982-91.
Presently, she is President of
Dungannon/Moy Branch,
Women's' Section and Area Vice
President representing Tyrone.
Mrs. Whiteside had a .sister
and two brothers, both pilots,
who also served with the RAF
during the 1939-45 war.
Tragically, her elder brother
was shot down over Holland in
June 1943, just 22 years old.
Her husband, John, who was
formerly Chairman of the
Dungannon/Moy Branch also
served with the RAF in India
during the war. His elder
brother, who was a navigator in
the RAF was shot down over
Burma in 1942, aged 23 years.
Although we received a picture
of Mrs. Whiteside, the photostat.
quality was not suitable for
publication.

-Ho* many of you have witnessed
an operation to fix a broken leg on
an animal?
Thanks to the F.E. Madill co-op
Program I have witnessed this an
more.
My name is . Mary Allen
MacKenzie and my co-op place-
ment is the Ripley -Huron Vet Cli-
nic,
So far I have learned how to use
the sterilizer and how to package,
articles that have to be sterilized. I
have witnessed dogs being vacci-
nated and have participated in put-
ting
utting a cast on a calf's broken leg,
filling up rabies vaccination needles
'and the well -know job of holding
cattle tails away from the vets.
I work with Dr. Ken Bridge, Dr.
Alec Martin -and Dr. Tim Blatt. I go
on call to farms with them to Iook
at sick farm' artimals. T also work
with the vet assistants and some of
the office staff.'''
I go to the vet clinic every other
'day, in the moming for two weeks
and in the afternoon for another two
weeks.
Thanks' .to the Co-op program, I
have seen all the dedication and
hard work that goes into being a
veterinarian, and have decided that
this line of work is definitely for
'me.
