"Bruce Beckons" sign. Turn right
and drive down the concession road.
This renovated log cabin with lovely
shrubs and trees complete with a
woodpecker banging away high
above, provides a warm welcome for
antique lovers. Fresh coffee, cookies
and chili sauce bubbling on the kit-
chen stove, herbs drying in baskets,
give a real feeling of cosiness and set
the tone for a delightful visit to a
delightful spot. This restored settler's
cabin contains individually described
sale items, pine furniture, collectors'
treasures and kitchen produce --- all
for sale. Make this stop a must.
Drive back to Bruce County Road
9, turn left and proceed to Colpoy
Bay Village. Stop at the Old Factory
and visit with John Thom. He has
some interesting tales of early days
when the log booms were floated
down to the Old Factory to be milled.
If you're looking for a household
item of yesteryear, chances are that it
will be at the Old Factory.
Proceed along Bruce 9 and then
follow the signs to Cape Croker Park
administered by the Ojibway tribe,
part of the Chippewas of the Nowash
Band. There are many good hard-
wood stands en route and colours
should be excellent until late October
if the weather co-operates. An ex-
cellent description of Cape Croker
was given by Mrs. Joe Akiwenzie in a
recent edition of the Wiarton Echo.
"Along the line of smoky hills the
crimson forest stands" -- the opening
line of this memorable poetic line
rings true for the far Cape "shrouded
in mist with only the bare outline visi-
ble to the naked eye. The nearer trees
are putting on their fall colours, as
yellows, golds and russet browns dot
the greenery. The lawn is a carpet of
green, with the little flower gardens
flaunting their fading petunias and
last roses. The sparrows are gathering
in the elderberry bushes and filling up
on the luscious fruit. The grey bay
waters are rippled by a south-westerly
breeze and the little island lies in-
distinct where the waters blend into
the grey horizon."
The variety store at the entrance to
the Cape Croker Campground has
native crafts. If Patty is there she'll
show you attractive items made with
porcupine quills, sweet grass baskets,
leather skirts and moccasins. Look
also for larger baskets from the
Saugeen Reserve.
The campground administered by
the band is close to the water and is
ideal for family camping.
Return to Bruce 9, continue north
and drop in to see the caves at Hope
Bay and Rush Cove; then continue to
Lion's Head. Look for a large stone
house with a widow's walk located on
the main street. Proceed to the park
and enjoy the magnificent view as
you look out over the harbour.
Georgian Bay waters, high stone
bluffs, fall colours and quiet
sideroads make a day's outing such as
this a memorable one and well worth
the time.
