Dr. Ernest Sanford, originally from Guyana, lectures all over North
America on swine diseases.
Dr. Sanford: Huron Park Vet
by Alice Gibb
Ernest Sanford would be the first
person to tell you he really didn't
have any special expertise with pigs.
They were simply one type of
livestock he treated in his general
veterinary practice in his homeland of
Guyana.
But today Sanford, Ernie to his
colleagues, lectures all over North
America on swine diseases he's iden-
tified at the Huron Park Veterinary
Lab, located on the Centralia College
campus.
Even before returning to Guyana,
after graduating from the Ontario
Veterinary College, Sanford was
drawn to the field—of pathology - the
study of disease, in layman's terms.
After three years in general practice,
Sanford returned to Guelph for post-
graduate studies to earn his diploma
in pathology. Then, taking a right
turn, he took a year-long clinical
residency in ophthalmology (the
study of eye diseases). When the year
ended, he decided pathology was his
1983
real calling, and in 1976, joined the
staff at Huron Park lab, which hap-
pens to be right in the middle of On-
tario's main hog -producing counties.
Today the lab, which acts as a
backup service for practising
veterinarians, is internationally -
known for its expertise in diseases.
Sanford is publicizing his findings
in both the lay press and scientific
journals, as well as addressing pro-
ducer groups. He's also receiving
tissue samples and phone queries
from veterinarians in several other
provinces and the United States.
Dr. Gaylan Josephson, the lab's
head veterinarian, Dr. Sanford and
Dr. Ed Waters, handle carcasses and
living animals from an area that
covers Bruce and Grey counties in the
north to Lambton in the southwest.
The next closest diagnostic labs are in
Guelph and Ridgetown.
About 50 per cent of the animals
examined at Huron Park are swine,
about 30 per cent cattle and the re-
mainder vary from poultry and sheep
